The schools that I applied to (other than my backup) are Boston University, University of Miami, Pepperdine University, Colgate University, Villanova University, College of the Holy Cross, University of Florida Gainesville, Lehigh University, and Wake Forest University.
My GPA is a 3.3 and my ACT is a 22, with writing being a 7. I’ve taken every advanced course that my school has offered up until sophomore year. I currently do full IB, and am pretty successful in it, except during every first trimester of the year as I was diagnosed with seasonal depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety. My grades greatly fluctuate for my classes as a result of my untreated illnesses, but my transcript does show that I am capable of getting an A in all of my subject areas. As for my low ACT score, I was never able to finish my test as a result of all of the symptoms that are associated to my mental illnesses.
Activities
Year round soccer in 9th and 10th grade for club and high school
Cross country in grades 10-12
Captain of cross country senior year
Model United Nations 10th grade
Volunteer work through cross country
Link Crew first trimester sophomore year
Employed by Target since the summer of sophomore year
Nurse baby/injured wild animals back to health in the spring and summer grades 9-12
I know my extra curriculars lack, but my school doesn’t have a lot of activities and I refuse to participate unless I’m genuinely interested. I start volunteer work at Mercy Hospital in a few weeks as I am interested in the medical field, but I will not pursue it unless my mental illnesses can be controlled.
Thanks for stating the obvious, but that isn’t what I asked. I’m looking for actual feedback on my chances of getting accepted into one, as these schools admit students with lower stats than mine, and I’ve taken the most rigorous courses and curriculum possible.
I don’t know what feedback you’re looking for. All of these schools are reaches and it’s too late to change anything about your application now. Good luck though and I hope you end up at one of these schools.
that person ^ did answer your question: all of those colleges are out of reach which means a >5% chance of being accepted. i’m not sure about UFG or Pepperdine, but i assure you all the other schools will not admit someone with a 22 ACT unless they are: the child of an alumnus who has donated large amounts of money, a one of a kind athlete, or an extremely hooked applicant. furthermore, your gpa is on the low side for nearly all of the schools as well (again, don’t know about UFG or Pepperdine) which works against you.
Maybe the students with a 2.3 gpa and a 16 ACT, but my GPA is only .3 off from the average of admitted applicants, which include the students who were admitted but didn’t attend. I’m a recruitable athlete for Colgate University, but Colgate isn’t my first choice and it would require applying ED 2 without a known financial aid package.
I know Wake Forest, Colgate and Villanova all have higher averages than 3.6. Chances for students with below average stats (tests AND gpa) with no hooks are below average and unlikely. That’s just the way it goes. For students with a “2.3 gpa and a 16 ACT” this list would be completely out of reach. You may get into one or more, but it’s good that you have a backup.
If you have an athletic hook for Colgate, run the net price calculator and see if the cost is in range. Did you visit there and like it? Using your hook is a better idea than holding out as an unhooked applicant for a school that will likely reject you anyway.
My backup is High Point University as the school has shown interest in me and my stats are within their range. The school has a 50-70 percent acceptance rate (different on every site) so it’s likely that I’ll get in, but I would transfer out after 2 years.
@AroundHere do you think that I could contact the cross country coaches at Colgate and retake my ACT February 9th? I would definitely improve because when I take my ACT, I would actually be sane, but do you think that Colgate would make that exception?
Your stats fall below the minimum GPA and ACT thresh hold for all these schools. That means your chances are statistically 0% no matter how many of these schools you apply to. Just focus on getting into a university and finding a good major. Most high paying jobs are not run by people from prestigious schools.
Also, consider schools where you will be successful academically. So many people focus on admissions. So you get admitted. Now what? Now the work begins. Many of the schools on your list are extremely rigorous. Attending and playing a college sport makes it much more difficult. What kind of college experience do you want?
What did you mean by recruitable for Colgate if you haven’t been in touch with the cross country coaches yet? If you could have improved your ACT, why didn’t you retake already?
I have no idea if you’re such a great recruit that Colgate would relax the rules for you. I suppose you could ask?
There’s a difference between taking the most rigorous courseload and being successful and there’s taking the most rigorous courseload doing average. You’re doing the latter. Your statement of “they accept people with lower stats than me” is completely invalid. No offense, but you have nothing that stands out. No great ECs, awards and you don’t have the ACT score to back you up. To be honest, you’re an average student applying to completely above average colleges, it is just not going to work. Your list is unrealistic other than Colgate, which if you’re an athlete, does not mean you’re completely guaranteed to get in. Even then, your credibility is questionable for the reasons that @AroundHere stated.
While your extracurriculars are pretty good, because of your GPA and ACT score, you fall out of minimum range for many of these universities, so I think that they are all reaches - high reaches for you. Maybe you should have put at least one university on your list that is more in your score range.
