And how do these differ from other subjects

math
science
english
history
foerign language(usually, although less core than the four above)

they differer because they aren't electives such as gym, music, art

what if gym is a requirement around here?

^ It is still not a "core" class. In fact, some schools factor out gym from your GPA.

what about a 2.5 credit class like Geoscience

what about a 2.5 credit class like Geoscience
[/quote]

It's probably not a core science class, as core science classes are (I believe) 1 year of life science (biology), and 1 year of physical science (Chemistry/Physics).

what about art history? technically a history?

Is an AP Government class considered a core academic class

I would consider it one.

my GPA with core classes only is like an 89

History includes any history (World, US, European, Asian, Art) and Political Sciences, Economics, Psychology
Sciences include Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Environmental, Earth, Geo etc.
Rule of thumb for any subject to be considered core subject you need to full fill the minimum core requirement.
Suppose you try to fill up History requirement with Economics and Psychology then it won't work. Similarly taking Earth and Geo to full fill science requirement won't work.

For top school you need 5 core classes all 4 years of your high school.
