Hi,

I'm transferring in the fall, and I'm looking at these schools:

University of Maryland College Park
University of Maryland Baltimore County
Towson University
Saint Mary's College of Maryland

American University
Susquehanna University
Goucher College
Dickinson College
Lafayette College
Washington and Lee University

I'm definitely applying to the top 4, but I'm unsure about the last 6 (still narrowing). Does anyone know how good the music departments are at these institutions? I am a vocalist. I've done some research, so I have a little bit of an idea, but I was hoping I might be able to gain to insight from others who have had experience with these schools.

Many thanks,

My daughter is an instrumentalist and really liked Dickinson (this was a couple of years ago) because there seemed to be lots of students who were pursuing a double major/ minor with music. She had a trial lesson with the professor for her instrument there and liked her and the whole vibe. She eventually decided to pursue a BM (dual degree) so she did not attend but she liked the school a lot and they gave her a very nice scholarship. They have a strong foreign language department and are very big on study abroad.
We toured American and the music department seemed a bit removed from the rest of the campus and not especially lively when we walked through. At the time, she was thinking about music business and it was a very small program with only a handful of students.
We toured Lafayette and didn’t meet a single other person interested in music. It was very engineering oriented and no one seemed to know anything about their music department.
Goucher is featured in a book called Creative Colleges but I don’t know more than that. I am planning to go there with my other daughter for a tour in the spring…she is also interested in vocal so if anyone weighs in on your post, I’ll be interested too!
I have old college friends from Maryland who tell me St. Mary’s is lovely, right on the water…like a camp!
