I Need Help Picking the Best Transfer School For Me!! :(

Hi guys,

I am currently a sophomore at Montgomery College Rockville (it's a community college) and I need help picking between University of Maryland College Park, Old Dominion University and Towson State University.

My major is either Marketing, E-business with Marketing, or Music Business Industry/Production. What I really want to study is Music Business, that's like "my dream major" but the best schools that have it are Drexel, USC and UM which are impossible for me to pay for. So here is what's going on.

UMD-CP has an amazing business school called Robert H. Smith. It is the closest to my house (in Silver Spring) and has the best reputation out of all schools. It is extremely tough to get into!

ODU has the Music Business program! The price is just about the same as UMD-CP and it is what I want to study. But they are still a growing school, with not a lot of reputation, and their Music Business program is an interdisciplinary program, fairly new, with too much emphasis in music core like singing a chorus and stupid stuff like that rather than a bunch of classes on music business itself. I emailed the program coordinator and he said they don't offer internships.
It would be good for the money and for the fact that it is what I really want to study, but compared to other schools, their program seems weak to me.
But the tuition is good around 8k in state, which is what I would be paying because Maryland doesn't offer this major and ODU is part of a program between Maryland and other southern schools which would let Maryland students pay in state for that program.

Towson is fairly close to my house and I've always liked it. It has a good business program as well and it has a double major of e-business with marketing which really attracts me. I like the marketing field and this school has a double major in something that I am interested in, and since it's in state, it is affordable. It is also an alternative in case I don't get into Smith.

My qualifications:

Montgomery College Renaissance Honors Program scholar
Board of Trustees scholarship winner (2 years full tuition- merit based)
3.5 GPA
Will earn a A.A. in Business Administration with Honors
Fluent in 3 languages ? :) Portuguese, English, Spanish

High School
Navy Junior ROTC about 15 different awards such as Honor Cadet, Cadet of the month, etc.
National Honor Society!
AP and Honors courses
Salto al Futuro and Identity (Latino clubs)
College Institute - Early placement for 3.5+GPA HS seniors at Montgomery College
3.6 GPA , 3.8 WGPA

Which school would be the best fit for me? I can only afford $8k a year.
Do you have any other alternatives for me? Please let me know what you think and what would be the best decision for me. Thanks :)

Have you run this list by the transfer counselors at MC? Happykid is a first year student there, and I’ve been very favorably impressed by the people I’ve met from that office.

Since you really want music business, are there any other Academic Common Market programs that would work for you? The website shows a Music Industry (Music Business) program at U of Memphis [Academic Common Market Undergraduate Programs](http://www.mhec.state.md.us/higherEd/acadAff/AcademicCommonMarket/commonmarketundergraduateprograms.asp#M)

Like everyone else, you need a financial and academic safety on your list (Towson would fit that perfectly) as well as some matches. You need to figure out the money issue. Is the 8000 that you say you can pay also your EFC, or is your EFC higher? If your EFC is higher, you need to find places that will offer you merit scholarships rather than just need-based aid. Again, this is something the folks in the transfer office can help you with.

If you visit the Transfer Forum here at CC, you might get even more ideas. Click on “Discussion Home” in the upper-left of this screen and then scroll down to find it.

Wishing you all the best!

A primary criteria in selecting this type of program is just how good the network, internships, and industry contacts are. In general, Belmont, Drexel, Miami/Frost, USC/Thornton, NYU, Northeastern, UHartford/Hartt tend to get very high marks in this regard. With an $8k cap, in state appears your only option.

Doesn’t answer your question, but you may find some detailed info within these http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/957443-music-business-industry-management-technology-production.html</a>.

You may not realize it, but there are programs that require an audition, as well as a thorough grounding in music theory, history, basic keyboard skills and ensemble participation as part of the degree requirements.

Realize also that much of your future success will depend on interaction with formally trained musicians, as well as music management/techies types with extensive backgrounds in the “stupid stuff”. You may wish to consider that as you refine your networking skills.
