I’ve heard that Amherst especially likes musicians…is this true?

So if I was an All-State Band and Orchestra Bass Clarinetist for 3 years…would that be considered a “hook”?

What they look for most is socioeconomic diversity. Music's always good, though. I don't know how it compares to other schools in terms of their interest in music, but high level and dedication to music probably helps.

If you want that to be your hook, I'd highly highly recommend getting a tape of yourself to the admin office. When I was a H.S. senior I (or rather, my mom) had a professional guy take video/sound clips from high school performances, master them a bit, compile into a short 5-7 minute CD/VHS tape/Audio Cassette (for whatever each individual college wanted) and sent it as a supplementary material. I think it definitely helped, and I'm still very involved in my voice performance/training while here. Best of luck.

Amherst specifically wants solo performances I believe.

It wouldn't be a redundant thing would it...? 95% of my EC's are all about music.

It's one thing to list all your accomplishments, I think it's another thing entirely for them to actually hear it themselves. And yes, most colleges do want soloists, which may be harder for you considering you're mostly in orchestra/band/whatever. But maybe you'd be able to record some pieces you've worked on, suited for solo work? It's definitely an option to consider, but not the end all be all to your app

I definitely could -- all of the honor band/orchestra ensembles required a solo piece to audition on. My band room is equipped with a nice recording system as well.

I just didn't want to overwhelm Amherst with a bunch of music things -- I really don't wish to look like an one dimensional music psycho.

Schools aren't looking for the kids who pad their resumes with a bunch of unrelated activities just to look well-rounded. If your passion is music, then your EC's will reflect that and they know how much time they take on top of keeping your grades up. If they don't like it, then look for another school that appreciates it. I think you are doing just great. Hope it's Amherst for you. And, yes, send that tape. Contact the music department. Send them one, too. It can't hurt.
