I play the violin in a proffessional orchestra that earns me around 30/hour. I know this doesn't really qualify as a hook, but will it aid me in some amounts when I apply to the ivies next year? It's definitely my biggest achievement as of far.

Any feedback regarding this would be appreciated.

of course. Have you gotten any special awards, recognitions,or honors? If you have, and this is a top-tier orchestra, then I think its a great hook. It shows passion.

Well, it's a very good orchestra, but definitely NOT top tier. Top tier would be my goal later in life to get into. And as for awards yes, but none too prominent. I've competed at the national level, but haven't won any awards. The notion I've always gotten is that too many musicians apply, and music just isn't much of a hook anymore.

If music is your passion, let it be. Talk about music in your life and how much it means to you, etc. Mention the awards, too. They may not be internationally recognized, but it shows how motivated and determined you are. Just competing and you never know...

I agree that you should showcase your music talents in your applications. It sounds like you are passionate about this and that is always a good thing. Be aware, however, that many many violinists apply to the Ivies. Showcase your passion for the instrument!!

Your descriptions of your music accomplishments seem to be intentionally vague. If you do want some input, you should be more speciific about you academic and music accomplishments and your goals. If you do decide to be more specific, you might post your questions in the parents section. There are a lot of parents who have kids with music talent and have been through the application process.
