What are the most interesting classes you've taken at uMich?

And who were some of the best professors you’ve had?

Sophomore here and haven’t really had any awe-inspiring classes or professors.

Maybe when I get into more upper level courses that will change.

In my day (1992-1996), classes taught by Sidney Fine (History) and John Holland (EECS and Psychology) were amazing. Unfortunately, both have passed away (Fine in 2010 and Holland earlier this year). They were both AWESOME!!!

I also took some fascinating Philosophy classes.

It’s all about the professor. Great professors make classes interesting, regardless of the subject matter.

It should be interesting to see what classes are considered interesting these days.

Best class I’ve ever taken: RCCS 365 - Politics of Education - Dr. David Thomas Burkham, in the residential college. It was rated the #1 class - all ‘5’ ratings that year ('06) . He still teaches it. Lots of other great classes in grad school but that one stands out for mind bending thought. All of your per-conceived notions of public and private education. political indoctrination and educational efficacy will be stripped away by that class. You will understand the history of education - from the puritans to Dewey to the modern university system an how to separate rhetoric from results. Students were all excellent - it’s a seminar format -but the class had huge (200p/wk+) reading requirements and 7-8 papers to write. It fulfilled the senior writing requirement.

It had value from both an academic and personal perspective and helped us choose schools for our children.

If it is available during your time at the U (at the time it was every other year) I’d highly recommend it.
