What are the most interesting TIDES classes at Tulane??

Hi - this question is for all current/past Tulane students- what TIDES class did you love or think was super fun/interesting? They all look great but wanted some real reviews or opinions.
Thanks

I’m not a student but since no one chimed in, I would venture to say that it all depends on your own interests! There are so many to choose from. My son is planning on going to Law School so he chose the Pre-law one. He looked at several other that he thought would just be for fun if that pre-law one was closed by the time he got to register. There are so many I wish I could go and take just because they sound interesting. There are some that may be related to your major (or potential major) dealing with Medicine, business, Law, Math, Engineering, Religion, Sciences etc- they all relate back to New Orleans in some way it seems which is really cool to see who those topis relate to the city . Then here are some that focus just on an area of NOLA culture like Mardi Gras, cooking, cemeteries, museums, sports, theater, dance, and on and on and on! I suggest narrowing your interests down and see which ones fit in with the other classes you need for your major. Have about 4 or 5 that really interest you (and still have openings). I really don’t think you will be disappointed with any of them. Unless you choose the running one and are not a runner! Good luck!

@vegasgirl1‌ - Yes, I think current students are scarce on here in the summer. Which is a good thing in some ways.

But dolphnlvr is right, there are a lot of interesting classes. And keep in mind I use term class loosely. These are 1 hour courses (in most cases) that are designed to be fun, informative, and a social experience so as to be another piece in integrating to college life. My impression is that as long as you show up for the classes, you will get an A. The grade is clearly pretty irrelevant. Just pick something that sounds good to you, something that you might never have a chance to look into again if you don’t do it now. Something like that.

Also some of them have a pubic service component that fulfills your requirement for the first year.

I’m going to be a freshman this year. At first I selected a TIDES course about medicine because that is the field that I want to pursue. However, I changed it after orientation. I met the Dean of Newcomb-Tulane college (and on the pre-med advising board) and he was such a cool and interesting guy so I wanted to take one of his classes. I then signed up for the Leadership, Politics, Power, and Change TIDES that he teaches. I’m not sure if you’ve had this experience with a professor, but it was important for me to develop relationships with professors.

@musicandtennis - If you are referring to Dean MacLaren, he is a great guy. You will enjoy that course a lot I am sure. I think originally President Cowen (ex-president after Monday) was supposed to teach that but I think he found that there were just too many demands on his time to do it justice. Either person, though, would make that a spectacular course I would think.

That was my sons second choice :)

@fallenchemist yes! Dean MacLauren just seemed so friendly and funny, plus the course evalutions on that class were very high! @dolphnlvr6‌ which one did your son end up choosing?

He went with Law & Order. He’s hoping to start networking with lawyers and other people in the legal community The Prof also teaches in the Law School

Looks like a new Tides Class was added, Public Education: NOLA Path to Change, taught by Scott Cowen! All seats are still available.

That’s interesting. I just read that he was going to take a year off before settling back in to teach and do all the other things he is involved in. Well, I guess we will see.

Must be weird for him to move out of the Zemurray mansion after 16 years. Although I am sure he and Margie have a very nice place somewhere in the area. I know Presidents of other schools get nice houses as part of the package, but I wonder how many are quite like that one.

I saw a picture on facebook someone posted of the moving trucks in front of his house. I know he has a condo overlooking the river, pretty sure it’s that beautiful high rise with the multi million dollar apts! I wonder if anyone will change their Tides class to his section? We wouldn’t have noticed if my son had not been looking to see what sections still have openings. Slim pickings for anyone who has not registered yet!

Yes, getting the TIDES class you want is much harder than regular classes. I imagine you are right that some people will switch as fast as they can and that his class will fill up quickly, unless no one finds out. Guess we will see how many students actually read CC in the summer. Of course one word on Facebook will do it.

I didn’t know about his condo. I just thought he might find a home uptown. Maybe they don’t want the hassle of maintaining a house. I can certainly understand that.
