What are the odds?

I'm planning on going to lawschool after I get my BA, but it still seems like a lot can happen between then and now. As of now im at a JC planning to transfer come fall 2006. I have a currently have a 3.84 and am applying to all but 2 UC's, but I'm mainly hoping on Berkeley and UCLA. At Berkeley I'm applying as a Mass Communications BA, and at UCLA a Music History. WHAT IM WORRIED ABOUT is if lets say I only get into UCLA, graduate, and don't have the stats for lawschool. I know that lawschools like history majors, but if I ever wanted a job without going to law school I doubt that'd be possible with a Music History BA.

Has anyone else majoring in liberal arts had these reservations about majoring in a passion with the hopes on law school?

It's not like law school is the only graduate school programme out there. Futhermore, a lot of very successful people did not have engineering, law, business, or medical degrees.

but what can you do with a history degree besides teach?

Depends on where you graduate from. I know people who went to Wall Street with history degrees.

In a lot of ways, though, that's the wrong approach to take. Unless you do engineering or business from a top school, what you do undergrad is NOT a professional degre and isn't meant to be. You could do a lot of jobs with a history degree - anything from things like working at the Smithsonian to things which don't require a specific degree, like sales or insurance - which can be quite lucrative. A B.A. or B.S. keeps your options open for grad school - that's when you can start to specialize.

Think of the people you know. The majority of degrees are not in professional areas, but people have jobs anyway. My parents & stepparents don't have professional degrees - their majors were things like economics and poli sci - but they all have fantastic jobs. It's a mistake to think that you need a law or medical degree to have a good living. IMO, try to work first before you say that there isn't anything out there for you.
