What are the options for storing your dorm "stuff" over the summer

Is there a cheap way to store your things over the summer? Do students who don't live within a driving distance toss their bedding and stuff at the end of the year and buy new again or store it? Please advise.

There are a number of companies that will store your stuff for a fee. I hadn’t planned to use them, but I had a knee injury that made moving heavy things more taxing than usual. We ended up paying them to take my son’s large dorm refrigerator. They’ll deliver it to his new dorm room when he moves in. It isn’t cheap for one item - $60. But it was convenient. This is one that many use:

Another that a friend used this summer:

We used this one:

Items that you don’t want can be donated and will be sold to students during move-in weekend at bargain prices. It’s a great way to get things for your dorm or apartment.

You could also take your winter clothing (sweaters and coats) to a dry cleaner for storage and cleaning.

Or you could try asking friends or people on the Cornell student facebook page if there’s anyone living off campus who is willing to offer storage space for reasonable prices.

Your best bet is always to ask friends staying over the summer to take a box or two. After freshman year, I had boxes in like 6 places - annoying, but it was all for free. This summer, I have my stuff in a storage unit that I shared with two other girls - for 3 months it was around $60/mo for a 5x5 unit that was a good size for us. Split up, that’s not so bad. It was Ithaca Self-Storage!

That’s smart, livychan1103. We just weren’t sure we could manage the weight of the heavy refrigerator by ourselves, since I had driven up alone to help my son move. If his dad had been with us, it would have been much easier. Rather than add to my knee injury, it was worth the $60 for the company to take his refrigerator and bring it back to Risley move-in weekend. Everything else was fairly easy to load into the car to take back home (where it is now totally in the way).

That totally makes sense - $60 is not bad at all for the whole summer, I think, especially if it’s one item. As a Floridian, I unfortunately have to keep everything up near campus since I fly home :(
