What are the people like at Johns Hopkins?

Hi all,

I'm not one to stereotype, but there are definitely some general trends in people who go to particular universities. I'm mostly curious whether Johns Hopkins has a reputation for something in particular. For example, Vanderbilt has a country music & party school & preppy slant to it.

It's actually not that important a factor, as I'm applying to it for graduate school, but I've found what I want in several universities, so this would help distinguish if I get accepted here and elsewhere.

Thanks!

I would say they are the following, if I had to generalize:

intellectuals
globally-minded
eager & motivated
out-going

Ok thanks. Sounds like no strong distasteful trends there. Evidence for a lack of a trend is just as good as evidence for.

I might have to disagree about the “intellectuals” part, unfortunately. Yes there are lots of smart people here, but I have met relatively few whom I would label “intellectuals.” If you want to find people to discuss particle physics or the economics behind the financial crisis with, you’ll have to look pretty hard. I wish it was more intellectual.

YanksDolphins- you will find more “intellectuals” by that definition than at 99% of schools…so save Chicago, Caltech, MIT, Swarthmore, and a few others.

Heh. I don’t think (@Yanks) that you can find many people who want to discuss particle physics anywhere. Except maybe in a physics department, though they’ve probably gotten tired of the subject too.

It was just an example. But particle physics has gotten interesting again as the LHC should be up and running and the search for the Higgs can commence.
