What are the pros and cons of Berkeley?

Title question

Depends on what your other options are. Pros and cons compared to what? UCLA? Stanford? Wesleyan?

Ever heard of the search function? Or perhaps looking at a stickied thread like:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/26518-getting-into-cal-what-expect-when-you-finally-get-there.html</a></p>

Don’t be lazy and waste board space.

for me, aesthetically speaking, the campus was really nice, the city of berkeley itself, not so much. as my parents and i drove up, we were like…, cuz u drive through a pretty sketchy area, idk if all of berkeley(the city) is like that or just where i was. another pro: there rugby team *ing wrecks shop

The pro for me was just engineering, close to home (could be a con at times too), in state tuition, and varsity sports. I don’t like the campus that much and the city is pretty sketchy all over.

I chose Cal because it shared the first three letters of my name.

The nice part of Berkeley is the Northside, in the Hills. That area is pretty swanky.

But I agree, if you want to live a more urban lifestyle, then it’s rather sketchy.

pro: cheap, city area

con: competitive, hard to get to know gsi, impossible to get to know professor

I’m not finding it hard to get to know professors. Yeah, during lecture it is nearly impossible. But so few people use office hours. I say this as a first-year in a class of hundreds: If you really want to, you can get to know your professors. You’ll just have to go a little out of your way.

I’m pleased to know people still cite my magnum opus for their pro and con needs. :D

For those with too much of a time crunch – and a bit of my own update now that I am nearly two years out.

Pros:
A nearly Masters level education rolled into a Bachelors. You will learn your stuff here and be heads and shoulders over nearly any other college graduate.
Big school, good to stay anonymous if you are a relatively private person like myself.
Professors are generally good, and if you can make that connection – you have a good connection for as long as you maintain good contact.
No hot girls, but lots and lots of nice girls.
World class education. Needs to be said again.
Good sports team(s).
The city of Berkeley.

Cons:
A nearly Masters level education rolled into a Bachelors. You will work harder than you ever have or ever will in your life.
Big school, bad if you are a relatively private / introverted person like myself.
Hard to get to know the professors.
No hot girls, but lots and lots of stuck up *****es.
The City of Berkeley.

Seeing a trend here? ;)

**Okay, there are lots of beautiful girls at Cal. I’m just being a snark! …really, “hot” girls don’t do it for me though.

Oh no, is this the return of the “No Hot Girls at Cal” posts?

Haha, agreed, andrewtdx - there are plenty of hot girls at Cal. You just won’t find them if you’re looking in the science majors.

Pro: Top Dog
Con: Bad Mexican food

They say after being at Cal for so long, one develops “Berkeley vision,” i.e, ugly girls start looking good.
