What are the requirements for Kenan-Flagler?

I found this on the UNC website:

UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School : Application Process

So as far as GPA and stuff, the requirements are clear.

As far as classes, what are the requirements?

I'm a sophomore in community college (in California), and am applying this coming fall to UNC. I do realize that transfer students have to do 1 semester in the liberal arts program before applying to Kenan-Flagler, but I just want to make sure that after I complete that semester, I will be up to par (have the required classes completed) to apply to Kenan-Flagler?

Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

It’s in the first link I sent (you posted the second one here) but its in an easier format to read in the undergraduate bulletin. It has more of an explanation of prereqs and classes:
http://www.unc.edu/ugradbulletin/depts/sch_bus.html</a></p>

Essentially, it is:

"A prebusiness track includes successful completion (defined as earning a final grade of at least a C, not C-), in the following courses (or their equivalents):

• BUSI 101

• ECON 101

• ECON 410

• ENGL 101 and 102

• The calculus mathematics requirement can be fulfilled by taking MATH 152, 231, or 232, or STOR 112 or 113. Students receiving credit by examination or transfer credit for both MATH 231 and 232 are exempt from this requirement.

• STOR 155"

You can see if any AP or IB credit places you out of any of these:
[Placement Credit](Credit Rules - Undergraduate Admissions)

and this other link i posted before but only if it lists your previous school (which it might not), you can look up transfer credits https://www.unc.edu/sis/adm/xfereq.html</a></p>

You can also look up other UNC course descriptions on the undergraduate bulletin:
http://www.unc.edu/ugradbulletin/</a></p>

for example, just type in “ECON 410” and go to ECON’s page to read some course descriptions.

Thanks man, I appreciate the help. So I checked here (the link you provided):

https://www.unc.edu/sis/adm/xfereq.html</a></p>

Out of the classes you mentioned, only ECON 101 and STOR 155 are available at my current community college.

Based on what I’ve read, all transfer students must complete one semester in the liberal arts program prior to applying to Kenan-Flagler. Is that one semester to allow us to take the classes we may have not been able to take at our community college?

I think I’d be best off getting in touch with a UNC counselor and asking them what classes would transfer to UNC?

I’m surprised you don’t have introductory English classes that would transfer over as well? Assuming you take ECON 101 (introduction to econ) and STOR 155 (introduction to stats) and you have English credits transfer over, you could take BUSI 101, ECON 410 and your math credit and still have two electives during your transfer semester at UNC.

I think talking to a counselor is a great idea but maybe you should just take ECON 101, STOR 155 at your school now…I would assume those would be general requirements/good courses to take no matter your eventual field. Especially business/finance based.

Usually if there’s no one has transferred that class from your school before, they might make you bring in Syllabi and sample assignments which they then review and decide what class credit is equivalent at UNC. But you might be able to wait on that until after you application phase.

John,

Thanks for your reply. You’ve been a big help!

That was my mistake. We actually do have the introductory English courses, and I have already taken them both.

All that remains left for me is: STOR 155 (offered at my school, I’ll take it this quarter), ECON 410 (not offered), BUSI 101 (not offered).

As far as math, my school has the following sequence:

Precalc 1

Precalc 2

Precalc 3

Calc 1

Calc 2

Calc 3

I’m going to be taking precalc 1 this quarter. Feel like I might be a little bit behind in terms of math.

No problem. I think UNC’s class structure isn’t as sequential. I’m not sure you are behind though.

Just as a reminder: “The calculus mathematics requirement can be fulfilled by taking MATH 152, 231, or 232, or STOR 112 or 113. Students receiving credit by examination or transfer credit for both MATH 231 and 232 are exempt from this requirement.”

It looks like Math 152, STOR 112 and 113 are more applied to business and economics so that might be a better option for you than calculus. HOWEVER, if you look at the descriptions below they all say they need Math 110 (Algebra). I would think the most important thing is that you take a math class at your school that would be the equivalent of Math 110. Your precal 1 might work but if don’t get credit for Math 110 you’ll have to wait to take the upper levels. It also mentions that you place out with an “achievement test”. I don’t know what that is so you’ll want to check on that. You might not even have to take a math at your school besides the STOR 155 statistics.

Here are the brief course descriptions I could find for the math credit courses:

MATH 152 Calculus for Business and Social Sciences (3). Prerequisite, MATH 110. An introductory survey of differential and integral calculus with emphasis on techniques and applications of interest for business and the social sciences. This is a terminal course and not adequate preparation for MATH 232. A student cannot receive credit for this course after receiving credit for MATH 231 or 241.

MATH 231 Calculus of Functions of One Variable I (3). Requires a grade of C- or better in MATH 130 or placement by the department. Limits, derivatives, and integrals of functions of one variable. Students may not receive credit for both MATH 231 and MATH 241.

MATH 232 Calculus of Functions of One Variable II (3). Requires a grade of C- or better in MATH 231 or 241 or placement by the department. Calculus of the elementary transcendental functions, techniques of integration, indeterminate forms, Taylor’s formula, infinite series.

STOR 112 Decision Models for Business (3). Prerequisite, MATH 110. An introduction to the basic quantitative models of business with linear and nonlinear functions of single and multiple variables. Linear and nonlinear optimization models and decision models under uncertainty will be covered.

STOR 113 Decision Models for Economics (3). Prerequisite, MATH 110. An introduction to multivariable quantitative models in economics. Mathematical techniques for formulating and solving optimization and equilibrium problems will be developed, including elementary models under uncertainty.

MATH 110 Algebra (3). Placement by achievement test. Provides a one-semester review of the basics of algebra. Basic algebraic expressions, functions, exponents, and logarithms are included, with an emphasis on problem solving. This course should not be taken by those with a suitable score on the achievement test.

Thanks man. It looks like I’ll have the required math classes to transfer to UNC, if I’m admitted.

This more applies to university applications as a whole; let’s say I need Math “51” (just an example). When I apply in Fall, I do not yet have Math 51 complete. I will be taking it in the Spring. Would this hurt my chances? Or if I meet the rest of the requirements, they can accept me pending the outcome of my Math 51 class?
