What are the single student apartments (SSA) REALLY?

I’ve read everything I can find on these things but I still feel like I lack basic information. I will be starting UCD in the fall as a transfer student. I will be 24 years old at that time.

Are they on or off campus? Is it a true one bedroom apartment for just me or am I just getting a room with other people in a larger, 2 or 3 bedroom apartment? I DO recall reading that they come furnished which I found interesting. Is this right? What else can you tell me?

Both The Lexington and The Arbors are off-campus, whereas Primero Grove is located on-campus. Here’s what it says about single student apartments:

You can check out the apartments’ websites to find out more about them.

You have your own room in a 2-4 bedroom apartment, but you will likely share a bathroom with someone. The room comes furnished with a desk, chair, dresser, bed, and mattress. The apartment’s shared area has tables, couches, chairs, a lamp, a stove and refrigerator. Primero Grove is ideal location-wise because it’s on campus. The rest of the single-student apartments are a bit farther away from campus.

I was a transfer student this past fall and I lived in the SSAs, in Primero Grove. The website says two different options for Fall '11, on one page it says it’s Arbors, Lexington, and Primero Grove being offered again like this year, and another page says it’s Arlington Farms instead of Primero Grove. So I’m not 100% sure if my apartment complex is still being offered.

Primero Grove is on campus. It’s definitely the best option location wise. I’ve never had more than a five-minute bike ride to my classes, and my closest class has been less than a minute away, which is really nice. The Arbors and The Lexington are off campus towards the edge of downtown. I’d estimate a seven to ten minute bike ride (through Downtown) to campus. I know the Lexington is really nice - they have a pool and gym (Primero Grove does not) and each room gets it’s own bathroom (one bathroom for every 2 people in Primero). Arlington Farms is the opposite direction from campus than Arbors and Lexington. It’s towards the town of Winters, kind of off in the middle of nowhere (nothing else but other apartment complexes and houses) but I’d say slightly closer to campus than Arbors and Lexington.

I’m pretty sure you only get a one bedroom apartment if you requested one. I know they send you a survey, via e-mail I think, and it asks you how many roommates you want, and different preferences such as when you wake up/go to sleep, if you’re okay with your roommates having guests, if you need a quiet apartment for studying etc.

Primero Grove came furnished with everything the previous poster listed. Some advice if you’re living in the SSAs is that you really need to make an effort to meet people. Since there is no RAs, you won’t meet people living on your floor like freshmen would at weekly meetings, or in a communal bathroom. I lived in a 4-bedroom (Primero Grove has 1, 2, 3, and 4 bedrooms) and on our second night me and my roommates decided we wanted to meet people so we went out into the middle of the courtyard and ran into five guys who had been going around knocking on random doors trying to get people to come out. We ended up meeting about twenty people that night, and the guys we first met ended up being our closest friends. (And if you’re worried about being slightly older than the average transfer student, don’t be. Two of my closest friends are both 24 :)) One of the rumors is that Primero Grove got a little too wild this year (multiple noise violations) because Primero is advertised as a quiet, studious community, and that’s why it’s not being offered to transfers next year but it’s just a rumor as of right now.

Sorry for making this such a long post. If you have any more questions let me know!
