I know the campus is diverse, but how liberal/open-minded are the people? Are they friendly?

(I'm trying to compare the atmosphere to Emory.)

Thanks.

My son is planning to addend IU this fall. He is from California, very open minded. he has found the people to be very friendly and is looking forward to going there in the fall. He had to decide between several UC’s or IU and decided that IU had everything he wanted. He is looking for a school with a journalism department (UC’s dont have journalism), a school with spirit and LOTS of sports, and a school with a college town. He felt that leaving CA and going oos was a stretch for him, but in the long run gives him a chance to experience living in another part of the country. Many people dont understand his desire to leave CA, but I am proud of his decision to stretch his wings and experience life outside of California.

I dont know anything about Emory, sorry. My son picked IU for several reasons and I wish you good luck in your decision making.

You get people on both end of the spectrum. In the business school there are a lot of conservative people, but in the college of arts and science there are a lot more liberal people. However, there liberals in the business school and conservatives in the college of arts and science.

I am in the b-school but have a left leaning political philosophy and it has been interesting listening to other students and professors talk about the health care bill. Also of note, my most conservative professor talked about how Clinton has been the best persident of his lifetime (yes, better than Reagan).

Everyone is friendly.

Thanks.

Also, does anyone know about the theater offered at IU? Can I be involved and feel like a big part of the theater scene even if I’m NOT a theater major?

I plan on concentrating in creative writing and possibly forensic studies (eventually). IU has a good writing program…right?

My son is actually planning on attending IUB and he too has lived all his life in California (San Francisco).
He intends to be a Theater/Acting major and will probably double major in international studies as well. We just came back from a first visit to IU and were absolutely blown away by the beauty and quality of the campus, buildings and facilities. I am the mom of 2 theater kids (I don’t know what happened!) and I have seen at least 20 theater departments all over the country( daughter is at UCLA); IU has by far the best theaters, facilities, equipment I have ever seen…and they are building and renovating as we speak.
That won my son over and he has chosen this over some UC’s, and 2 private LAC’s in Los Angeles, and Chicago.
Hope that helps! PS The performance opportunities are open to anyone at the school…don’t need to be a theater major at all.

Thank you. Is there a lot going on around campus? One worry I have is that with no city nearby, I will not have much to do…

Just to give you an idea of the best weekend at IU. You are posting on the Little 500 weekend. Look up the Little 500. You will understand what happens on campus.

It seems like there are tons of different things to do every day and night. My son worries a lot about not being in a ‘city’ but knows that he will likely end up living in New York, LA, Chicago or Sf, so kind of nice to see other parts of the country, people, and have the whole classic college experience.

Is is definitely different, that is for sure. If you want, you can PM me if you want any more info, since we just came back from there. Also my mom is an alum and former Daily Student editor in chief…

Wishing they were as cool as the kids at Purdue. WAZZUP!

broadwaylover07,
You should check out the IU Auditorium usher program. Students volunteer to usher at the performances , it does not matter what major you are and it is a great way to meet like minded people. You also get to see some amazing shows. There is info on the auditorium web site.

The web site describes the usher program as follows:

This is one of IU’s greatest student activities! The Usher Corps is an excellent place to meet more than 800 fellow students who also enjoy the performing arts. We’ve even had ushers meet here and get married! But you don’t have to find a life partner to have a good time ushering. From Broadway’s finest to the latest bands, we present quality entertainment to the university community and the surrounding area. We are glad to have you as a part of our organization. Call time for volunteers is 90 minutes before the event begins and ushers are free to watch the event they worked or take off once the event has begun.

Do you have to Audition to get in to Theater Major?

no, only for MT
