There are a lot of common conceptions of AU students, that a large portion of the guys are gay or ugly (not judgmental that’s just what I heard), is that true/ how true is it? Is the gay population of guys noticeable? I swear I’m not judging I just wanted to know

According to my D (rising senior), there are guys of every kind at AU - gay guys, preppy guys, “fratty” guys, nerdy guys. AU is pretty diverse and I’m not sure any one type totally dominates. AU is a LGBTA friendly campus, but that’s not all there is.

I’d say AU has a higher than average population of gay men. But I believe that’s the case at most non-religious urban colleges, as the LBGT community has more resources and social opportunities in a large city than in suburban or rural locales. As for the “ugly” inquiry–do you really believe a college would in some way attract men of less than average looks? How exactly would that come about? (It’s just my good breeding that is stopping me from telling you to grow up.)

As MommaJ points out, urban schools are likelier to have gay students that more rural, conservative campuses. This also may be accentuated by the fact that gays at schools like AU are more likely to be “out” rather than staying in the closet out of fear of being rejected, etc.

Having been around the AU campus an awful lot the last several years, I actually think that the students are much better looking than the average college students, if that should matter at all! Students at AU tend to be mature, savvy and ambitious, which translates into the fact that they put themselves together well and present themselves well. While my son can be slobbier than any other slob on any campus on any given day, he also knows how to make himself look good for any kind of situation.

(also, I am not quite sure of how to put this and be politically correct–especially as I think it’s really stupid in all directions–but if you want to stereotype campuses and groups of people, isn’t the stereotype of gays that they are very attractive? So how would you categorize the AU student body as heavy on the gays, and ugly? I think you need to improve your advanced thinking skills, and get rid of your prejudices, before you come to a campus like AU. Ignorant people generally won’t fit in real well).

ahhapok - before attending any school you should visit and see how you like it. In your case, you can go and determine if you like the way the students look. Other people less focused on looks and more on education and opportunity can view the campus, facilities, faculty, and courses.
