What Are You [considering] Turning Down for Cornell?

Thought this would be interesting? Well, let's get this started!

Is it worth it to go for the IVY???

UT Engineering, lol

University of Maryland - College Park for engineering: I have a full tuition scholarship there. So it's 36k (MD) vs. 200k (Cornell).... I'll take the first one, lol. :)

maybe dartmouth

Possibly UNC (Honors), NYU (Stern), Rice

Ithaca U is calling...

Binghamton University, Possibly Brown and Chapel Hill (i'm waitlisted for both) but I think i'm going to go to Cornell.

I might turn down UMich which, with the merity money there, will cost about $20-25,000/year less than Cornell. Money is not a factor, but I hate to waste my parent's money. Should I go to UMich or Cornell, assuming I can afford Cornell without taking out loans.

I think it matters what major and such. Umich is a great school...but I think Cornell is better. If u can afford it then I'd say go for it. My parents can barely afford it but said they would send me to it no matter how hard we had to work for it. If ur parents CAN afford it pretty easily then I'd say go for it. When I'm a parent I know I'd rather send my kid to the best school if I had the money than otherwise. Since umich is good so I see why this is a hard decision. I guess u gotta follow ur preference. (also if u r gonna stay in Mich go to mich. If ur gonna stay in New England I'd say Cornell. I donno it's a toss up other places. I'd say Cornell is probably well known everywhere...ESPECIALLY internationally.)

for me its between penn and cornell....cornell is better for engineering overall, but penn is better for biomedical engineering. i might change my mind too.

any advice?

Ithaca College...you're joking right?

Emily u might wanna make a whole new thread in order to attract the attention of people who would have the most insight and knowledge about it. Great schools, hard decision. Congrats on both schools!

I got the trustee scholarship (full tuition) at BU. Right now, I am 99% sure I want to go to BU, but do you think it is worth turning down an ivy for BU?

BU is not worth it, BC on full ride would be something to consider though

worth turning down berkeley/ucla for cornell?

For me it is between Illinois Institute of Technology and Cornell. I am an architecture major. At IIT all I would have to pay is room. Cornell is to be announced. I don't know.....?

Emily, have you toured the engineering depts at both Penn and Cornell? Even if biomed is your field, I think it is a wiser choice to go to Cornell because of the strength of the Engineering school overall.

Yeah, those electrical engineering people get some great synergies with the biomed.

...on second thought, try the school with one of america's best hospitals attached to it.

Both Cornell, Berkeley and maybe very slightly less UCLA, have great professors, top-notch programs all around and great facilities.

The choice depends what type of person you see yourself as. If you are more outgoing(not just what you see yourself as - honestly, ask yourself this) and can seek out the help and opportunities you need, then Berkeley or UCLA is a great place to be. There are more people, more opportunities - the Bay Area is great for all high tech esp electronics, finance. LA is also great for high tech, esp Bio and obviously the entertainment industry. And, of course, there's the weather and the proximity to huge Urban areas.

However, if you are more introverted, you'll probably do better in Cornell, which is a bit smaller and more intimate. Profs at the UCs don't generally take interest in you unless you start going to office hours and what not, and lower div class sizes can be very large and turn you into a number. Cornell is also probably better if you're more a nature person and enjoy a quieter environment.

Both are great schools and any difference in undergrad is negligible. Really depends on who you are. I should point out that I did my undergrad at Berkeley and am considering Grad at Cornell, which is how I know both schools.
