<p>wow that was really entertaining. i understand fountain tht u may be a bit offended at pandas comment but u dont have to launch a whole attack on him with 15 links and start arguing about his view on AA which is totally disconnected to his 2 word comment! i have lots of persian friends, including my verrry bestest friend and we always joke around about stereotypes--and its all in good fun. and im sry to say tht stereotypes are stereotypes because they have some truth, although often a kernel. so whts the big deal if hes trying to identify a girl, if shes persian shell prolly have dark hair and eyes so tht rules those descriptions out--and if he says shes not hairy, why is tht so bad? it just happens to be tht many mideastern ppl have darker, more visible hair because of the melanin in their skin. so wht! do U think tht being hairy is a negative because thts wht it seems like and tht in itself would be offending hairy ppl. it sounds ridiculous but my point is tht ppl, especially teens joke around and to take everything so sensitively esp when it wasnt really such a deragotory comment is just going to make things unpleasant for u and everyone else. and just bc ppl joke around doesnt mean theyre insensitive. so sry if u got offended by pandas comment but just look at the whole pic</p>

Oh please. Are you saying that calling a persian hairy is the same thing as using a derogatory word? I've also used those words in front of my friends.</p>

You see, it all depends on context. My school is approximately 1/5 to 1/4 Persian and I'd have no problem with repeating what I said in front of them.</p>

<p>Many ethnic people have had pejorative phrases used to describe them. FYI, they don't usually like it. The "N" word is the most famous of them but by no means the only one.</p>

<p>woodwork brought up an interesting point- we have all heard about the problems certain minorities face, in this case, the use of particular terms to describe ethic groups. I think that it is inexcusable to use any of these terms on any circumstances. You know that you shouldn't use the "N" word or else people will take offense.
as an Iranian, I personally take offense to these terms... just as a Jewish person would take offense to being called cheap. any comments about physical characteristics of any ethnic group, as light-hearted as they may be, will offend some members of that group. You may say that an amount of hair cannot really be offensive- but I think that the concept of stereotyping Iranians, or any other group of people for that matter, is what I really consider offensive.</p>

- Just because you are not bothered when people say derogatory Polish jokes does not mean that other Polish people will not take offense to those same jokes. All that I am saying is that you have to be sensitive of how possibly derogatory statements will be received by certain groups.</p>
