What are you doing the summer before college?

I don't mean to interrupt,
But what exactly is a

"nonhairy Persian"?

Is it like a "non-greasy" hispanic?

Is it like a "non-hookednosed Jew"?

You were accepted at Penn. I don't suppose you used these terms in your essay.......it would have made them think you were an insensitive person, and you would'nt want that.

Weren’t you the same person arguing against affirmative action (ad nauseum) in another thread? Not much of a surprise there, is it.

“I am not a racist, i fact, I support equality of race.”
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6310&page=6&pp=20%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6310&page=6&pp=20</a></p>

“Firstly, naming one case without any details where a black kid was punished more than a white one does not prove that racism still exists in America.”
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6310&page=11&pp=20%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6310&page=11&pp=20</a></p>

……………………………………Here should I assume you do not believe racism exists in America? This would be big news, a cause for celebration to many, even “hairyPersians.”

“I'm glad that you're now going to work for black education, but your mentality is not equal to the general black mentality.”
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6310&page=11&pp=20%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6310&page=11&pp=20</a></p>

…………………………………Here I assume you mean that the general “black mentality” (whatever that might mean) is inferior to this persons “black mentality.” No?

"and you're saying that there would be a just as racially diverse population without AA at ivies?"
no, but who cares?”
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6310&page=16&pp=20%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6310&page=16&pp=20</a></p>

………………………………….Who cares indeed?!

“I, for one, refuse to look at race when I judge a person.” <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6310&page=17&pp=20%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6310&page=17&pp=20</a></p>

…………………………….Would that include “hairyPersians”?

“But what's also interesting is that no one has responded to my evidence for AA harming African Americans.”
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6310&page=18&pp=20%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6310&page=18&pp=20</a></p>

…………………………So then, is your point that you are looking out for African-Americans (I’m sure they appreciate it), or that you are angry that they are unfairly taking away the rights of white-Americans?

“For every underqualified URM that gets in, a white person suffers.”
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6310&page=11&pp=20%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6310&page=11&pp=20</a></p>

………………………….hard to say what your agenda is.
I have no idea what you are like as a person. But I question the degree to which you are motivated by making the world better, or better for people like yourself:

“this trust fund baby lives in Los Angeles”

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6310&page=8&pp=20%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6310&page=8&pp=20</a></p>

You may be right in your opinions on affirmative action, I really don’t presume to know. I do know that your righteous opinions are belied by your attitude towards people who have no experience with trusts funds or summer tours through Europe.

I won’t say any more on the subject and I wish you the best. Penn, I’m sure will be an awesome experience for you.

Good luck.

a little angry huh? stop thread crapping

By the way,
for what its worth

I'm Persian.

double post. read the next one.

wow fountainsiren! nice ad hominem! (please show me how my being rich has anything to do with my opinions on subjects. i'd also like you to explain to me how said opinions "are belied by [my] attitude towards people who have no experience with trusts funds or summer tours through Europe. " and in the same breath defend your character assassinations given that i've never been to europe (and if I go, i'll be going for a few hundred dollars including airfare both ways), have many nonwealthy friends (a few of my closest friends attend my school on fin. aid), and started an exchange with jordan high school, a city that is close to 100% minority with about 60% of its students living in the PJs). if i weren't so smart i might have actually fallen into your trap.

also, fountainsiren, my absolute best friend is persian. he has used similar terms. i've also come in contact with the girl in question and i assure you that she would not take any offense whatsoever because, well, THOSE ARE HER WORDS (although she was slightly drunk at the time, or it seemed that way!).

also, i think you're being slightly presumptuous when you presume that i'm saying being hairy is a bad thing or mocking hairy people.

"……………………………………Here should I assume you do not believe racism exists in America? This would be big news, a cause for celebration to many, even “hairyPersians.”
"

Look up the word eisegesis. And even if that last sentence didn't totally demolish your "argument" (note the quotation marks, please) the answer to your question is found within the URM Chances thread. But hey, nice eisegesis.

"…………………………………Here I assume you mean that the general “black mentality” (whatever that might mean) is inferior to this persons “black mentality.” No?"

ABSOLUTELY NOT. I'm sorry fountain, but you're being ridiculous here. Go to that quotation in context. If you still can't see why you're wrong, then I feel sorry for you. Oh, and what I find ludicrous is that many african americans(momsdream, ethioman, another whose name i can't remember, and davidrune i believe -- if you count him as african american) on this board actually made the claim that blacks have their own culture -- and they don't support AA. I believe they made before me, but don't quote me on that.

"…………………………….Would that include “hairyPersians”?"
Was I judging anyone? Honestly, man, I'm having a hard time believing that your post is actually serious.

"“this trust fund baby lives in Los Angeles”"

UMM, ONCE AGAIN, I'M SERIOUSLY HAVING A HARD TIME BELIEVING THAT YOU ARE SERIOUS BECAUSE NOT ONLY IS THIS A BLATANT AD HOMINEM ATTACK BUT BECAUSE IF YOU LOOK AT THAT QUOTE IN CONTEXT (don't go editing out the links so people can't see what an idiot you are!) YOU'LL FIND THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT QUOTE AT ALL.

I've never done this before, but I'm giving your post an D-. Honestly. Out of any debate I've gotten in online (and i've gotten into quite a few) this was the most ridiculous and poorly argued post i have ever read in my entire life.

by the way, is anyone else slightly freaked out that I seem to have a stalker?

I, as I'm sure you do, have black friends who use the "N" word amongst themselves.

I don't take that as my que to repeat it in conversations.

You apparently do; we’re different.

If you’re not sure if this applies to Persians, go to a gathering of Iranians, and start referring to "non-hairy" and "hairy Iranians" and see how it goes.

I think your post was ethnically insensitive. I have no idea whether you are or not.

Thus,
this is not an ad hominem attack (although, clearly, your response was).

It's a comment on your posts, whether they reflect something greater within you I have no idea at all.

I assume all people are good people, even when I disagree with them or am offended by them.

by the way,

stalking you!

give me a break, I've never even been on the same thread as you before.

Imagine using another way of describing ethnic groups that you are not part of, like Persian------ Mexican----------- Jewish-------------- Arab---------- German ................it works for me and requires no great moral effort.
It is done by civilized people everywhere------less colorful, but decent none the less.

Again,

Good luck to you,
You’re probably a great guy, you got into Penn, that in itself says alot.

wow that was really entertaining. i understand fountain tht u may be a bit offended at pandas comment but u dont have to launch a whole attack on him with 15 links and start arguing about his view on AA which is totally disconnected to his 2 word comment! i have lots of persian friends, including my verrry bestest friend and we always joke around about stereotypes--and its all in good fun. and im sry to say tht stereotypes are stereotypes because they have some truth, although often a kernel. so whts the big deal if hes trying to identify a girl, if shes persian shell prolly have dark hair and eyes so tht rules those descriptions out--and if he says shes not hairy, why is tht so bad? it just happens to be tht many mideastern ppl have darker, more visible hair because of the melanin in their skin. so wht! do U think tht being hairy is a negative because thts wht it seems like and tht in itself would be offending hairy ppl. it sounds ridiculous but my point is tht ppl, especially teens joke around and to take everything so sensitively esp when it wasnt really such a deragotory comment is just going to make things unpleasant for u and everyone else. and just bc ppl joke around doesnt mean theyre insensitive. so sry if u got offended by pandas comment but just look at the whole pic

i'm sure that chocy can vouch (chocy knows her) that she wouldn't take offense to what I said.

"I, as I'm sure you do, have black friends who use the "N" word amongst themselves.

I don't take that as my que to repeat it in conversations.

You apparently do; we’re different."
Oh please. Are you saying that calling a persian hairy is the same thing as using a derogatory word? I've also used those words in front of my friends.

"If you’re not sure if this applies to Persians, go to a gathering of Iranians, and start referring to "non-hairy" and "hairy Iranians" and see how it goes."
You see, it all depends on context. My school is approximately 1/5 to 1/4 Persian and I'd have no problem with repeating what I said in front of them.

"Thus,
this is not an ad hominem attack (although, clearly, your response was). "
No. Ad hominem means "you are wrong because of X, Y, and Z." I don't think I said that (if I did, ignore my argument). While that last post might not be literred with a.h's, the post that started this undeniably was.

and i was kidding about the stalking part. it's just kinda creepy how you found all those posts!

I am Jewish, by the way.

But i appreciate your peace offering!

I hate people who get angry about PC, just live with it. Its not like I flip out every time someone cracks a dumb Polish joke or anything.

Choclatechip87,

Many ethnic people have had pejorative phrases used to describe them. FYI, they don't usually like it. The "N" word is the most famous of them but by no means the only one.

Jews have them.............don't use them though.
Arabs have them............ don't use them though.
Polish people have them.........same.
Etc………………

Perhaps they all have some relation to reality, noses, skin color, hair, posture etc.
Don't use them............really, unless you feel you must.

check out this thread, and you might see that I’m not the only Iranian to feel this way:

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=25991&page=2%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=25991&page=2</a></p>

I doubt you would find a Persian on CC who thinks it’s just fine.
Though perhaps some non-Persians would, obviously.

Honestly guys,
as is the case with all ethnic slurs, the only defense is ignorance.

But, do as you wish.

Peace.

of course deragotory terms are offensive--i dont like when ppl classify jews as moneygrubbing or cheap but panda telling me the girl he knos from my school is short and nonhairy--not quite analogous to the n word. a stereotype about ppls appearance is not nearly as offensive as a stereotype describe personality or culture.
" Honestly guys,
as is the case with all ethnic slurs, the only defense is ignorance."
HOW THE HELL ARE WE IGNORANT??

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhh

wondering what might happen if itwasn't about a Persian, but a more PC protected ethnicity?

Intresting debate though.

the fact is, that it wasn't.

it would be like me saying "that light skinned african american [i've never met one, but i use the example because momsdream said they exist]"

And by the way, i counted exactly 2 people who agreed with you.

woodwork brought up an interesting point- we have all heard about the problems certain minorities face, in this case, the use of particular terms to describe ethic groups. I think that it is inexcusable to use any of these terms on any circumstances. You know that you shouldn't use the "N" word or else people will take offense.
as an Iranian, I personally take offense to these terms... just as a Jewish person would take offense to being called cheap. any comments about physical characteristics of any ethnic group, as light-hearted as they may be, will offend some members of that group. You may say that an amount of hair cannot really be offensive- but I think that the concept of stereotyping Iranians, or any other group of people for that matter, is what I really consider offensive.

just visited the thread in question:

make that 3.

How many disagreed:

make that 0.

I'd say, give it time.

There is no good time to say a crumy thing.

It would not be like saying that "light-skined African American."

It would be like saying that thin-lipped african American.

or that straight-nosed jew.

come on now.

since when is calling someone hairy a compliment.

If you think so, try it on your next date, "my, you're so hairy, wow."

Or, you're not very hairy for your race.

come, come now.........

play fair

Faux:
"I hate people who get angry about PC, just live with it. Its not like I flip out every time someone cracks a dumb Polish joke or anything."
- Just because you are not bothered when people say derogatory Polish jokes does not mean that other Polish people will not take offense to those same jokes. All that I am saying is that you have to be sensitive of how possibly derogatory statements will be received by certain groups.
