Am I capable of getting in, or are these schools beyond my reach? Feel free to add any other schools that you think I would be admitted into. Thanks ALOT!!!!

UofI yes
Northwestern maybe
NYU YES
columbia doubtful
stanford doubtful

But don’t let my opinion stop you from reaching. You can do it. Be strong.

Based on 30 ACT

UofI: High Match (instate); Low reach (out of state)
Northwestern: Not Possible
NYU: Mid to High Reach
columbia: Not Possible
stanford: Not Possible

btw… That UW GPA is impossible with only one B. And does really having one B put you at 64 in your class? Does that mean 63 students at your school have straight A’s? I think you did your stats wrong…

that just means that in his school so many kids are given As so easily. it happens. don’t be so shocked. anyway, OP, if you want to talk about your chances, i prefer to do it off a forum. PM me your AIM or your MSN

No, a 3.72 GPA UNWEIGHTED is not possible with those stats!

yeah maybe. i’m no familiar with the US grading system but i’m pretty sure tons more students get As than those who really should. it really puts an inordinate amount of competition on internationals who actually have to work their asses off to get As.

You’r GPA is a 3.83, not 4.0. You have one B which was received in Freshman year. A 30 ACT score seems a little low for your grades. Colleges may think your grades are inflated which is never in an applicants favor. As for as your EC’s go, the only appreciable one would be the HS Newspaper Editor so maybe if you elaborate on this aspect of your in applications it would improve your chances (especially if applying for journalism major).

NYU - MATCH (i don’t know what the Reaches up there are about)
Columbia, Stanford - REACH
Northwestern - Low Match/Reach
UoI- MATCH

I agree with everybody else. If one B puts you that low on your class ranking then every college will question the difficulty and competitiveness of your school.

it’s psychology btw.

It’s possible that other students have taken more AP courses than he did. Someone could have more B’s, but if there are more AP courses to balance it, that student would have a higher ranking. For all you know, there’s someone with 6 B’s but 6 more AP courses.

As for his GPA - some schools weight classes differently (like colleges).

On unweighted an A=A no matter what. A=4, B=3, etc

That does not give him/her a 3.7

On unweighted an A=A no matter what. A=4, B=3, etc

That does not give him/her a 3.7

There are two types of “weighted”. What most high school students know is weighted based on difficulty (e.g. an AP course is on a 5.0 scale because it’s more difficult than a normal class).

What most college students know is weighted based on actual hours of study. So if you have Chemistry 1 hour per day, 3 days per week, that’s a 3 credit hour class. If you have a lab 1 day per week, that’s a 1 credit hour class.

An A in a 3 credit hour class + B in a 1 credit hour class = 3.75 GPA

Considering there are classes like “Driver’s Ed” in there, I assume that he spent less time in that than in Physics, so it’s conceivable that his GPA could be based on that (not saying it is, just that it’s a possible explanation).

No, GPAs are always calculated with credit hours in mind. If your in an AP class and a regular class, the AP is 5 units/credit hours and you get an A and the other is 3 units/credit hours and you get a B, you have a (54+33)/(5+3) = 3.625 GPA unweighted. Say APs are weighed with an extra point, then you’d have (55+33)/(5+3) = 4.25 weighted GPA. UNWEIGHTED GPAs DO NOT VARY. Maybe this person is a ■■■■■, there’s no way she could have that GPA with the grades listed.

I’m a she, and definitly not a ■■■■■. I mistyped, I’ve gotten two B’s and my GPA and class rank were taken before my Junior Year when I got straight A’s so maybe that affected it? I just put what was on my sophomore transcript so maybe there was an error. Thanks for all the advice.

That’s why. Your GPA is much higher now.
