It’s all in the title. Just got accepted there and am still debating going. What are your general thoughts on the school?
Hi, I also got in there and I’m not sure if I’m going. There are some helpful youtube videos about it, you can check those out. Please keep this thread updated on what you decide to do! I’m also very very confused about it
Don’t go to this school!! I went for 3 semesters (I transferred elsewhere) and while it started out fun, you begin to realize just how disorganized the school really is. The administration is ineffective at handling problems, advisors are unhelpful and unknowledgeable, and teachers are not involved with students. Many students have to retake courses because of poor pass rates and despite many complaints and petitions to the school, nothing has been done. Over 40 people failed ENTRY LEVEL Calculus, many of whom already took AP Calculus. The curriculum is not the same as it is in NYU New York; even NYU Stern covers LESS in their classes and those Stern students are arguably getting a better education and better grades. There are going to be many who do not study away because they do not meet the GPA requirements of a mere 3.0 and many will not finish in 4 years.
Feel like I should offer another perspective to the above^
If you are looking to have a typical college experience centered around GPA and easy classes, then yeah don’t go to NYUSH. If you are looking to make connections pretty easily, travel across Asia and have access to opportunities pretty easily (which would take the other campuses a 2 hour long career-fair followed by a crapshoot at an interview) then I would say NYUSH is a great fit.
Disclaimer: Most opportunities within China will require Chinese, however personally most of myself and friends have had no problem finding internships with either startups or Bulge Bracket/Big Tech abroad, really depends on you.
It is a challenge (particularly the two years due to foundation courses, gets easier from there believe me). However the university is constantly evolving. The university is constantly testing new things, much like the rest of China. I came with 0 Chinese, and now have a pretty decent amount to socialize, date and even work. Do I plan to stay in China? Doesn’t matter, because the people I have networked with all want someone with some knowledge of China coupled with something else. And that is what NYUSH offers that no other universities offer. Within my first year I had partied with a NBA Hall of Fame star, spent a month living in the suite of the Mandarin Oriental, made friends/gotten recommendations for working at a few VCs, Goldman, Intel, and have a personal mentor who is at AirBnb. Everyone is literally 20 seconds away. There is a lot more of course, but for the sake of this already long post I will skip over it.
The largest CON: it is a heavy workload to deal with, and you will not be spoonfed. Another is the student body is small (although you have a revolving group of students every year, as you literally see each grade level only once, plus study aways constantly come through and they’re pretty fun). Lastly, Shanghai’s expat life and social life can get repetitive, so it depends on you to mix it up.
ALL OF THAT BEING SAID: should you be able to manage yourself without being babysat and have the ability to create opportunities/talk to people, then really you have no problem.
