Hi Futureholds!

I am a current freshman at NYUSH, and I can happily say it is going well so far! The school itself is so new, so a lot of our time is spent helping it get onto its feet by starting clubs, making connections, etc.(our most recent project has been drafting our own school constitution!).

I, and it seems like most everyone here, is very happy with their decision to attend! I have friends back home who went to state schools and NYUNY, and many are having a much harder time adjusting (lol). Already we, because our school is so small, have become an extremely close tight-knit community. We call people by their first name and everyone knows who youre talking about. That has its own problems, but for the most part its great- you never feel left out. Because coming here meant leaving everyone behind (especially for the international students), everyone was eager to make friends and explore. This schools been great!

Im not gonna lie, its so hard not speaking mandarin here. But its also fun, because you learn very fast! especially the practical things- like how to order lunch and deal with a cab driver. Living in the biggest city in the world, and everyone speaking Chinese, makes learning the language much more fun!!!

There are a lot of people doing engineering and computer science! I cant speak much for the major, because I am Business/Finance, but if you really want to get in contact with one, just PM me and I can give you their contact info!

YES. I think the most recent statistic is that 1/3 of the international students (that includes the US at this school) got full rides. Personally speaking, the merit aid has been very generous- not to the extent of Abu Dhabi, but MUCH more than NYUNY. I am from Texas and I got a full ride, when my FAFSA did not show need. NYU Shanghai is being generously supported by philanthropists who want to see this school work, and you should apply for sure: they will offer you more money than probably any other school you apply to.

You do not need to apply to any other school to get into NYU Shanghai. It is a member or the NYU global network- so you can decide where you want to apply and be evaluated for each separately. For example, you can apply to your choice of NYUNY school, and NYU Abu Dhabi, and apply to NYU Shanghai. Or you can just apply to NYU Shanghai. Or any other combination you want- NYU Shanghai is part of NYU, but it is not contingent on applying to any other part of NYU.

The school is cheaper for Chinese nationals because the Chinese government is supplementing their tuition. Schools are much cheaper in China than in the States, and if NYU expected them to pay full tuition then no one could afford to go. Therefore, in order to have NYU Shanghai, the government agreed to pay part of their costs. So no, the International students are no in any way “subsidizing” the Chinese students.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask or PM me! There is also another thread that is worth reading- it should be close below this one- titled “NYU Shanghai”
