Hello! Im thinking of majoring in something business but I also really enjoy art! I've heard that minoring in some kind of art would help you stand out from other business candidates so im wondering what kind of minor would be good? Would theatre be okay? or would fine arts be better? Sorry for bombarding with questions but i also was hoping that maybe i could take on some kind of double part time job, one for artistic fulfillment, the other for pay. so would double majoring be better than having just a minor? and in general, what side major/minor is a good complement to business?

A art minor might help you stand out, chiefly because no one else is likely to have an art minor, but generally it’s not likely to give you an edge in hiring.

If you enjoy art, however, there is nothing wrong with doing a minor in art just for your own satisfaction. There is no rule that says a minor needs to be related to your major.

Double majoring is better than a major/minor combination as it gives you greater depth in two fields. A lot of employers don’t really pay much attention to minors, unless they give you specific skills in a relevant field for the job.

Good complementary majors/minors for business depend, in part, on whether you do a specific subfield of business.

^Math, Statistics, Computer Science, and Economics are almost always good for business fields.
Communication, Sociology, Political Science, & Psychology are good for some areas of Management.
Geography/Urban Studies are good for real estate.
IR, Languages/Area Studies, Geography are good with International Business.
Computer Science, Engineering, Biotechnology might fit with Entrepreneurship.
Communication, Psychology, Sociology, Graphic Design are good for Marketing, Retailing.
Communication, Psychology, Sociology, Adult Education/Training are good for Human Resources.
Sociology, Public Health, Political Science are good for Health Care Administration.
Geography might be good for Logistics, Supply Chain.

And, as for your original question, Arts might be good if you wanted to pursue a career in Arts Administration. Many organizations in the arts field are nonprofits, and much of what’s involved is fundraising.

I think that theater would be more useful for a part-time art job because there’s plenty of small theaters out there that put on performances during nights and weekends. I can’t think of anything involving part-time art unless you sell art or teach art classes.
