I am a high school senior and have been accepted into my top choices with a major in biology. Although this was the plan, I am a bit concered considering so many people have complained about jobs in this particular major. I was planning to go to medical school, however I am afraid I don’t have a chance because I am not a genius like everyone is saying you have to be. I am without a doubt going to some type of graduate program, my only problem is what? I would appreciate some advice from people who have been in this position. I would just like to know what my next steps could/would be if I had a degree in biology, and if it’s worth it? I am very concered about my future so thank you for the help!
Not a whole lot. The degree in itself is darn near worthless and frequently makes the list for most under-employed majors. It is only useful as a stepping stone for a healthcare professional program like med pharm dental PA PT etc.
Go to med school, pharmacy school, or dental school. Or go on to graduate school in Bio. Teach high school bio. Other than that, it isn’t very employable.
My dd’s friends, who started out as bio majors-because they were all “definitely going to be physicians”, have had changes of major. They’ve found out that the major isn’t as easy as they thought, it’s so broad in scope, and, if they don’t get high MCAT scores, there are no viable jobs for someone with a BS in biology.
So, other than going to grad school, nursing, med school, pharmacy, PA, which is extremely competitive and difficult,
you can work as a clerk or admin assistant for an insurance company, law firm, etc. I did see a person at my local Automobile club with a degree in Biology posted behind his desk.
