What can I put on my portfolio?

I really like making things with Lego, it’s not Lego robotics but I make quite a lot of things with Lego that I use in my everyday life and some of them are quiet good and I’m thinking of submitting them as maker portfolio. Is it too simple/childish for the MIT portfolio?
Also I want to submit a music portfolio but my type of music is not one of the options (music production). I can submit composition and performance but I want to highlight on production because I’m writing essay #1 about it. And since they said on their site that “We recommend submitting work that represents a range of styles or skills if available” I’m wondering whether I can submit multiple tracks/songs of different genres (i.e. orchestral and future house) if that’s what they’re looking for (it’s not like I’m trying to create something that I think will impress them, it’s more like I already created something that I think they might be looking for so want to include as much of that as possible).

The music portfolio used to require a music teacher’s recommendation. Do you have a music teacher you can ask?
Look at You Tubes to see what Maker Portfolios have been submitted. I have seen a wide range including crochet items for the maker portfolio.

These portfolios cannot hurt your application, only help, as they are optional. They are typically evaluated by a music faculty member, and an art or engineering faculty member, as I understand it. The MIT admissions officers hand them off to other experts to evaluate.

@Coloradomama I don’t have a teacher, but the admissions office said that the teacher section is optional for independent musicians and I can just put a placeholder name/email. My main issue is not having a category that fits my type of music, though.

Just submit what you have and hope for the best. They may help. It at least shows you have a passion, even if you don’t follow the rules exactly, I am not sure what you mean by “category”. I think you can submit a tape, which it seems you have. Are you asking how many minutes they will listen to? I would say under 15 minutes of recordings, but read the rules and try to follow them.
