What can you do with an International Studies Degree?

Does anyone know? I am very interested in this degree, mostly because I am fascinated by different cultures. But really? Is there any bacon to bring home?

International studies is generally a really broad major. You'll have long lists of different classes that you can potentially take to fulfill your major. Does an international studies degree mean you will make a lot of money? No, probably not. I think the average salary will be pretty similar to most other humanities majors.

depends what you mean.

if you mean along the lines of international relations, it probably means work for a think tank, NGO, or government agency like the CIA, DoD, or State. I'm betting the pay is pretty good.

I say if you love it, go for it! But wat is it you think you want to do?
On top of that add Foreign language!

I have to disagree with what IBfootballer said. The likelihood of you landing a job in the CIA, DoD, or State is extremely low. If you want to up your chances you'll need to go to grad school. These agencies are looking for people with at least masters degrees. That isn't to say you could get into something with a bachelors, depending on what that job it is, but just be aware you are going to have to get a security clearance. So if that is your plan, you need to be super straight-edge. They are looking for boy scouts.

Hm.... Can anyone recommend some similar majors? Maybe even any that might make some more dough. (Staying within the international humanities type of idea)

I have a similar question. What do you guys think of the major International Political Economy (BS or BA...my school has both options)?

What could I do with it?

No major garuntees you doe. Maybe if you went to law school afterward and did international law you could make lots of doe. If by doe I assume you mean six figures. Getting an undergraduate college degree will seldome get you this. You usually need a masters or some other form of graduate study to put you up into that range. You are looking at this the wrong way. Instead of thinking of a major and then seeing what it gets you, you should think about what you want to do (at least in general terms) then think about what kind of major or course of study will get you there.

I’m also thinking about international studies or political science. Not sure which one yet but I plan on going to law school when done with undergrad.

Doe is a female deer. You mean “dough”.

You can add BA International relations under the education section of your resume, but that’s about it.

I know there’s a difference. I clearly made a mistake, but you know what I meant.

Look as far as what Euler said its pretty much wrong for the most part. Yes everyone looks better with a masters but departments such as the CIA, NSA, DIA, DHS, and FBI all look at things such as your GPA and your record. They look to see if you have military experience and relative job training you have to at least have your bachelors and it has to be in something important to them. Like clandestine services in the CIA looks for strong interests in international relations and if you have a high GPA with a degree in that then you are looking good, just do your own researsh in the best advice for you. Don’t listen to what people say, you will be much happier with outcome if you do it yourself and wind up doing what you want.
