What can you insist on in a Roommate Contract?

As a parent, one thing that I would suggest bringing up is whether or not it is acceptable for your roommate(s) to spring small pets on you unannounced. This happened to younger d when she came home for a long weekend. Her two roommates went out and bought a mouse that they kept in a cage. This was acceptable in dorms. After Christmas vacation, that mouse was gone but one of her roommates had to be custodian of a fish in a bowl as part of pledging a sorority, some kind of tradition. The fish in the bowl became kind of smelly and gross.

An update:

My son eventually chose Ole Miss, largely because they were the only ones, among his finalists, that had a rule (a law, in fact) against overnight visits by the opposite sex. (He was also offered a crazy good scholarship.)

As it turned out, by the luck of the draw he got a roommate who agreed, in their roommate contract, that they would not have girls in the room. So he’s set for this year, and next year he’ll most likely live off-campus.

He likes Ole Miss and my wife and I love it. It’s a gorgeous place and the people couldn’t be friendlier.
