Would you say that the CAP21 studio are looking for better singers or better actors? Or let me put it this way: Which talent does CAP21 look at more closely at those audition. If I had been singing for a lot longer than I had been acting or vice versa, which do you think would have a better chance getting in? Thanks.

I will go "out on a limb here" and answer your question, somewhat that is, because in the end I really don't think there actually is "one answer that fits all" :).

My D has had extensive training in both dance and voice, and would have considered acting her weaker area. She has been accepted and will be attending CAP21 in the fall. A little more information though, she did attend acting workshops at A.C.T. and at several intensive musical theatre training programs the past few summers. Now, she absolutely loves acting, which is in fact in part what attracted her to NYU; she felt she would have access to a great variety of acting techniques and instructors.

At the end of the day, I really think that, along being in the "academic ballpark, it is all about balance between talent, passion and eagerness/openness to learn, but the latter probably holds true for many programs however.

Chiming in here to say that MTgrlsmom is right, as usual. ;) I think that the CAP21 auditors choose their class from among kids with different strengths in the three areas: acting, voice and dance.

Some kids come in as very accomplished singers who are less competent in acting and dance. Some are wonderful (for their age) actors but less good in singing, and, well, you know the drill.

Remember that the auditors at CAP21 (and at every college or conservatory BFA program) do not expect (and could not reasonably expect) recent high school graduates to be bonafide "triple threats." They really do understand that you are young and that your talent needs to be developed.

I think as long as you have strong enough talent in some area to be excellent that will be enough - it could be either. I think it is important to be a singer though, as that is the main thing that differentiates CAP from most of the other studios.

Thanks. That makes me feel a bit more hopeful. Personally I have much more singing experience than acting, and even less dance, but I think I have enough of each to altogether be a contender. Thanks.

Sounds good, just keep working on all 3 areas as you prepare for your audition. You still have time!
