I am going to be a junior in high school and have been doing musical theater for several years. I can dance (ballet, jazz), have been taking private vocal lessons for two years and continue to grow stronger, and am confident in my acting. I am worried though if I will be good enough to be auditioning for CAP 21 in 2010.

My singing is my main concern. I know you have to be a strong singer because it is musical theater but do you have to be broadway ready? do you have to be an amazing belter or a strong soprano to get in as a female?
I am a mezzo-soprano/alto type and I have a little vibrato and am working on making it stronger. I have an good volume to my voice…I think…
Any information is greatly appreciated!!!

theatergirl, I do not think that the auditors at NYU/Tisch/CAP21 (or at any other university BFA program, for that matter) expect students coming out of high school to be "Broadway ready" at the age of 17 or 18!

It's wonderful that you are only a rising senior but already thinking in terms of college, because that means you have time to continue to train and to grow in all three MT areas: singing, acting and dance. (Be aware, however, that unlike some other BFA programs, Tisch/CAP21 does not have a dance audition. That said, it's great that you are an accomplished dancer. Keep it up!)

Continue to work with your voice teacher to develop your abilities and to learn about good vocal health habits.

The only thing you can do is to continue to train and work and to research various BFA programs as to their quality, curriculum, reputation and requirements, and then make your list of schools for which to audition.

Good luck! It sounds as if you are on the right track: just keep going! :)

I agree, I wouldn't worry too much at this point. Work as hard as you can and have fun developing your abilities as much as you can this year. And don't worry, I know people in CAP who are not strong singers but are strong in other areas.

i have a question..
im gonna be a senior this year.. and im auditioning for tisch... but... i didnt know it was possible to audition specifically for CAP21... do i have to write that down on my application form too? or... damn... im lost

yes you apply for a musical theater audition rather than just an acting audition. the difference is you sing as well as perform monologues. but you could still be placed in any studio or request any studio as your back up.
