in the past week ive put over 100 hrs looking into what career i wanna major in and i cant find anything right for me :(. i would love to be a police officer but i cant because the chances of that are almost impossible here on long island. and i dont wanna graduate college with a degree in crimal justice knowing that i wont find any job in the field when im out. anyway, i like airplanes and space and anything that relates to weapons, i cant be a pilot though because its very hard and expensive. i hate everything that relates to business and accounting. i really love cars, problem is cars nowdays are all computer powered and stuff not to mention its a low paying job and i like old cars. i was thinking about being a dietitian/nutrionist, but there not many on long island so finding a job would be hard. same for being a teacher, its hard to find a job around here. i really just want a job that i will have fun and enjoy it, if i can have that which i probably never will then i dont care about the money. im 18 and im going through hell thinking about my future, any ideas? any job suggestions?

I had no clue what I wanted to do when I was 18, so I joined the Navy. It was an awesome experience, and they gave me 60K for college after I was done.

Im 18 too and im no expert but have you thought of leaving long island?

Try the South…that is LSU, Tulane, etc…I know Tulane is private school BUT they give lots of scholarship, financial aid, merit aids, etc. Dont underestimate your potentials and life is good. Take care.

What about aerospace and/or mechanical engineering? Maybe get involved in ROTC? The suggestion to join the Army/Navy before going to school is not a bad one.

Lots of kids from your area (north-eastern states) go to Tulane…it is amazing school and you will be exposed to fine education, nice culture (its a diferent world-frenchy kinda thing), good entertaintment of NOLA (new orleans), and of course good food and drink, second to Vegas. Give it a try…you are only 18 and see the world for yourself. Have fun…

As far a being a cop, fair warning: everyone will hate you. The quality of person who wants to be in your life will be lower than average, and many of your daily responsibilities will be regarded as socially destructive and morally repulsive by a majority of good, honest people today, let alone decades from now. My dad was a cop, my brother is trying to get on, and they take constant crap over it. Even if you are morally OK with the situation, and OK with the fact that you probably wouldn’t have much money (I find it refreshing that you are), you’d still have to deal with relationship that modern Americans have with law enforcement, and it seems like a really sad life to me.

Just a thought, though.

Personally, if I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, I would either become a nurse and chill out and make my life about things I enjoy more, or just take math and science classes until I could sketch out a better idea.

OK… I got it ! oppss maybe not…how about them cooking schools, like Culinary Institute, etc?..or if you dont like cooking, how about them trade schools like carpenter, mechanics, fixing computer (A+, N+, Cisco Certification, Microsoft certification, etc)…how about becoming bar-tender?..well, dont give up you are still young.

i think i may just be a civil engineer or around those lines. **** im gonna hate my life. and btw anyone who works on long island specifically suffolk county makes atleast 3 times the amount of money as most places. in the newspaper not long ago there was an article about how cops in suffolk can make upwards $200,000 a year, no joke. teachers usually make around 80-100k. im not complaining.

You know, if a cop gets paid $200k, you must realize that the job will have a significantly heightened risk of trouble.

Being a Long Island police officer is one of the best gigs around. It really is almost impossible to get a job; I hear it takes some people 5 years to get in. It’s not particularly dangerous too for law enforcement either. NYC cops get paid significantly less and find themselves in more “hairy” situations more often.

If you are hard-pressed to find something that interests you, you might want to look into career schools. They offer affordable education and the time needed to take classes is usually pretty short. The programs they offer are diverse, and will get you working in your chosen field relatively quickly. One area that is growing considerably fast is the culinary field. With New York City in your backyard, there are so many possible opportunities.
