Hi, i want to know before going to orientation.
What classes did you guys take?
Do you get to choose your classes before every quarter ends or do you have to choose them at the beginning of the year?
What classes would you recommend for the first quarter of college?
I don't want to be bombarded by hard classes =/

You choose your classes for the next quarter before every quarter ends. Your enrollment time is based on how many units you have completed. There is an add/drop period the first 1-2 weeks of the quarter. But keep in mind that the quarter is only 10 weeks.

Here’s what I took freshman year.

I was in the CHASS Connect freshmen program, which is a year-long (one per quarter) sequence of classes with a common theme. My theme was religion, or “Manifestations of Spirituality.” There are five different themes every year. These classes are denoted by “CHFY.”

Fall:
ANTH001 - Cultural Anthropology (S. Ness)
CHFY002J - Art History: Approaching Sacred Images (M. Baker)
ENGL001C - Applied Intermediate Composition (A. Gikas)

Winter:
ANTH005 - Introduction to Archaeology (S. Fedick)
CHFY001F - Religious Studies: The Virgin of Guadalupe and Other Latin American Goddesses (J. Hughes)
CS008 - Introduction to Computing (T. Gustafson)
PSYC001 - Introductory Psychology (S. Clark)

Spring:
CHFY002F - Ethnomusicology: Sacred Soundscapes (J. Ritter)
MCS001 - Introduction to Media and Cultural Studies (T. Miller, listed as B. Miller)
MCS023 - Introduction to Media Art (K. Rogers)
HIST020 - World History: Twentieth Century (K. Tomoff)
HASS092 - Holy Consumerism! Selling Religion as Pop Culture (V. Nyitray) (1-unit seminar for fun)

If anyone has any questions about the subject matter, what TA to get, etc., just ask! :)

I’d say the easiest GE class to take during the fall is ANTH001 with Ness.
An easy available every quarter is CS008 with Gustafson.
Also popular are PSYC001 and 002. 001 is cognitive/brain psychology, 002 is developmental.

This is a good thread. (: More posts pleaseee!

I’m going in as an engineering major my freshmen year, most likely computer engineering. I’d like to know the classes other engineering majors took their freshmen year.

A few notes:
I’m a double major - Anthropology and Film and Visual Culture (FVC).
That means I’m in CHASS, so I can probably answer questions about CHASS breadth classes with more certainty, but I’ll try to help everyone.
Also, I recommend CHASS Connect – only if you’re really ready to have a well-rounded learning experience about the particular themes. This might help if you’re Undeclared and wanting to see what interests you. Plus, you get to know the same people (more or less) over the whole year. :)

I’m so confused about the classes I should take in my freshman year. I’m majoring in Psychology, so I’m in CHASS. What classes would you suggest I take?

I have interests in Organic Chemistry and Photography (not sure if there is a class on this), as well.

I was placed in Math 22 (Calculus), and I passed the AWLP. (<-I think those are the abbreviations.)

Forevermore:
The Psychology section of the catalog lists a sample course outline that integrates the breadth requirements as well as the major requirements. It’s designed to get the general requirements like English and Foreign Language done within the first two years (which I agree with).

This is only a suggested guide; it’s up to you to ultimately decide:
<a href=“The Office of the Registrar | UC Riverside”>The Office of the Registrar | UC Riverside;

I suggest that you take three classes the first quarter to get a feel of how college life and course load are like.

Also, taking different breadth classes early on can help you see if you really like Psychology. If you are Undeclared or want to change your major, you must do so by Spring quarter of your second year.

I am a bit unfamiliar with science courses, unfortunately. I believe the BIOL005 A/B/C series (Introduction to Cell and Molecular Biology) may be organic chemistry, but there are prerequisites even for this lower-division class. It may be full because of all the majors who actually need the class as a requirement.

As for photography, ART003 (Introduction to Photographic Methods) is where everyone starts for photography. Very limited space though, so you may not be taking it your first quarter.

I say definitely take English your first quarter (depending on where you were placed) to be done with that requirement. Otherwise, explore and have a little fun with your classes the first quarter – take anthropology, religious studies, ethnic studies, art history, computer science, physics, geoscience, history, etc.

Anyone have one for CNAS?
