To all Biology majors, what classes did you take your freshman year?

I am going to be a Biology major obviously. I am not sure what classes I'm going to take in the fall. I know I'm going to take Math and Beginning Composition. I know I am going to take about 4 classes per quarter. What other classes is required as a freshman?

please answer my question…

I’m assuming your major is Biology and not Biological Sciences. In either case, you can look at these links:

UCR Department of Biology: [Department of Biology: UCR’s Biology Major](http://www.biology.ucr.edu/academic_programs/major.html)
UCR Catalog for Biology: <a href=“The Office of the Registrar | UC Riverside”>The Office of the Registrar | UC Riverside;

In addition to taking Math and English the first quarter (which is good, so you can be done with it sooner), you may want to start on either the BIOL005A/B/C, CHEM001A/B/C or PHYS002A/B/C series because all of these sequences are required as core curriculum for the Biology major and will be prerequisites to upper-division classes.

If you pick only one of those sequences to start on, you should also pick a GE class. Maybe a humanities/social science course to take it easy if you really want to take four classes your first quarter.

Thank you for the links! They were really helpful! Would you recommend me taking 4 classes the first quarter or is that too much? I have another question. Is sociology 101 part of the breadth requirement for UCR?

You’re welcome. Apologies – I did forget to mention that the BIOL/CHEM/PHYS sequences all have prerequisites that mostly depend on what math you’re taking.

I’m going by what the Schedule of Classes says:

BIOL005 prereqs: CHEM001A and CHEM001LA (lab) with C- or better.
CHEM001 prereqs: MATH005 OR MATH008A with C- or better.
PHYS002 prereqs: MATH008B OR MATH009A with C- or better.

Again, this depends on what math you are taking. Sorry I forgot to mention it. But if you haven’t yet taken any of the prereqs, I suggest you do those now so you can enter the sequences as soon as possible.

I suggest taking three classes to have an idea of what the course load is like and to get used to college life. But I do know people who have taken four or five classes the first quarter and they’re alright. It depends on the person. I took three to be safe.

If by Sociology 101 you mean SOC001 (Introduction to Sociology), then yes, it will count as the one required Anthropology/Psychology/Sociology class of the social sciences breadth requirements. More info on CNAS breadth requirements: [College (CNAS) Breadth Requirements](<a href=“Department of Physics & Astronomy | College of Natural & Agricultural Sciences”>Department of Physics & Astronomy | College of Natural & Agricultural Sciences)

No problem. What if I’m taking Math 8A in the fall quarter, can I still take Chem001?

u can only take chem 1a if u are enrolled in in 8b or greater.
schedule(learning community, u should think of signing up for one)
Fall
Chem 1a
english
math 8b
winter
chem 1b
english
math 9a
Bio 5a
spring
chem 1c
bio 5b
math 9b
english(up to 1c if not take breadth)

I can’t enroll in math 8B cuz I will be placed in math 8A.

Hey, I’m wondering, how long does it take to fulfill a 4 unit course?

I’m thinking either a year, or one semester, but I’m not sure…

are you asking me?

Um, anyone who can answer

not sure what you are asking?

I noticed on the required breadth courses, that they usually require some multiple of a 4 unit class-
12 units Social Science, 4 units biological sciences, etc

So, if I were to take one class, for one year, or one semester, how many units would I get from that class?

there are three quarters at ucr.
each class is about 4 units per quarter.
ie, social science takes you one year and bio sci takes one quarter
of course the course subject would have to change each quarter
hope i helped

ucr runs on the quarter system so every quarter you would choose a new set of classes to take
so for example…let’s say you take math during this fall quarter and the math class is 5 units…so when you complete the class, you get 5 units

Thanks, now the breadth requirements won’t seem as confusing anymore

I’m a bio freshman at ucr, if I’m enrolled in math 5(precalc) and eng 1A, what other classes can I take? What do bio freshmen usually take?

Hi again, sunnyfish!

In addition to Math 5 and English 1A, you would probably take breadth requirement classes. For CNAS majors, this is the breadth requirement list:http://cnasstudent.ucr.edu/files/Breadth.pdf</a></p>

You can check the classes that are offered for Fall 2012 here, so you can plan out what you want to take:[UC Riverside - Schedule of Classes](http://student08.ucr.edu/em/classes/ScheduleNew/Index.aspx)

They’ll explain everything more at orientation, and they will help you register for classes.

Hey 42327119! Thanks for always helping me out, I really appreciate it :D
