What Classes Should I Take My Senior Year?

Yes. You’re taking an accelerated Algebra II/Trig/Precalc class. Indeed, it must move fast.

But, having looked back at your original question, I see I’ve lured you away from the point. Sorry about that.

My advice is still that you should take what you like (within reason, of course) and not worry too much about second-guessing Harvard.

Yeah… I’m talking to my counselor tomorrow about said potential schedule on the first page. Though I have tons of back up classes in case some don’t work out ><; No AP Latin? LET’S TAKE SPANISH (or Japanese… or something.)! Once I’ve gone through all the APs… heh. I’m also considering elective math courses (ironic, I know), but mostly APs… I actually prefer APs to regular HS courses cuz of the potential college credit, so yeah ^^;

So, I talked to her, I have an idea of my schedule. More APs then I expected!

Leadership (was taking it anyway, didn’t bother including it)

AP Latin

AP Eco

AP Studio Art

Lunch

AP Lit

AP Bio

AP Bio

Health/Gym

AB Calc

I’m still most likely going into Pre-Calc, but my counselor said if my teacher recommended me, I’ll be allowed into Calculus. I’ll talk to her… this is great! I’m scared as heck, and everyone’s telling me I’m insane, but eh. My counselor was trying to sway me away from all these APs, till I told her I wanted to go to an Ivy League, and then she kind of understood but warned me that I can’t drop these classes next year. (That’s how it is in my school- if you take a class, you /cannot/ drop it.)

I do have a new question, if I can continue in this thread- we’re starting with recommendations. We can only get one rec per subject, so I can only choose the teachers that would, obviously, give me the best rec. The Social Studies teacher who would give me the best rec… graduated. I have my Freshman year S.S. teacher, who I LOVED, but I wasn’t the best student and she didn’t recommend me for AP World. My average in her class was in the high 80s. This year, I have my AP US History teacher… but I only have an 89 in his class. I’m not the best student, though he doesn’t hate me. I also have my Leadership teacher (counts as Social Studies), but… I wouldn’t say I’m the best in that class, either. I have a 90. I had a 98 in my Global class last year, but that’s the teacher that retired. She loved me. I asked her for a rec before she left, and she told me to ask my current teacher. It’s not that she wouldn’t’ve recommended me, I think she just didn’t want to be bothered/felt a Junior teacher was more appropriate. For the Freshie teacher, I was lazy and didn’t do all my work. For my current teacher, well… he’s told my mom I’m a good student, but I could be better. And then my Leadership teacher… I’m not really sure what she thinks about me, or if she’d give a good rec.

I dunno’. Any opinions?

MIT has a great site for teachers (and students) on recommendations: [Writing Recommendations | MIT Admissions](How to write good letters of recommendation | MIT Admissions)

You want to choose a teacher knows you really well, one that can attest to your participation in class, your writing style, your leadership skills, your maturity and overall potential as a student and a scholar. Your freshman year teacher can only talk about what you were like as a student 2 years ago – you need someone more current, as I’m sure you’ve grown since then.

Also, a little update: I found out I might get into BC Calc, AB Calc, AP Stats, or Pre-Calc. So, yay?

Apparently, the recs at my school work like this: All the teachers send the rec to the counselor, and the counselor writes a huge letter with selected quotes from all the teachers and sends it to the college. Do you think I should just skip Social Studies entirely?

“The Social Studies teacher who would give me the best rec… graduated.”

^^ If you can contact the above SS teacher and have them send a letter to your gc, yes!

Ending up finding her, actually. Reopening this thread for a related question:

My school offers Credit Recovery, which basically means you fail a class, take a (CastleLearning) test with a 100 questions, if you get over a 65, you get credit for the class. Which is pretty stupid, and most kids find it “too hard” anyway. For me, CastleLearning is a joke, I have some of it for (non-credit) homework.

Though I fortunately haven’t failed any classes, would it look good to take this test and get some extra credit on my transcript? I think I can get up to about three. Or would it look bad as it’s credit recovery? (though I’m not sure it’ll say so on my transcript… will probably just be an extra class.) I’m sure my guidance will kill me >.<

Also, it would take up no room in my schedule- I could do it in an hour or two at home, or on a vacation day at the school itself or something. So it’s not like it’d be replacing any major classes, just an add-on :)

Bumping this thread
