This has probably been answered here and there, but I can't find anything that helps me a lot. I am planning on being an MCB major most likely, and I was wondering what classes you guys (especially current students, I don't see why people who haven't gone yet would know) think would be good for first semester.
I have completed my QR requirement through APs, FL through AP latin (latin counts as a foreign language, right?), AHI through APUSH, and my writing requirement and my reading comp. requirements depend on my english AP tomorrow (I suspect a 4, so that would take care of the writing and RCa).

The website recommends that I take 4 classes adding up to 13-14 units.

Should I take all science and start getting them out of the way? Math 1B, Bio 1A, and Chem 1A look good to me. Does the extra lab stuff that comes with Bio 1A count as another class? Should I take a humanities course to mix it up a little? Any and all input would help.

If you do get a 4 on the AP English (either the Lit or the Lang), it will only exempt you from the first half of the R&C requirement. You will only get credit for both halves if you get a 5 on the AP English Lit exam.

For my first semester as an intended MCB major, I took Chem 1A, Italian 1, ESPM 60, and NES 24 (freshmen seminar) for a total of 14 units. I know a lot of people who has taken Math 1A and Chem 1A together, but never with Bio 1A in the same semester. Bio 1A is not available to freshmen, and Telebears doesn't take into your AP credits for your first semester (and maybe even your second, but I'm not quite sure about that). Personally, I think your best bet would be to take Math 1A (or whatever math level you are comfortable taking), Chem 1A, a course to satisfy a breadth requirement, and maybe a 1-unit freshmen seminar. That will add up to 13 units given your breadth selection is a 4-unit course. If you feel this is too little, you can always enroll in DeCal courses at the beginning of the semester. These courses are taught by fellow students, and are generally about 1-2 units, depending on the course.

Did you take Italian just to satisfy the requirement? It seems like my FL requirement is taken care of, but I am interested in learning french.

I am actually in the middle of preparing for the AP test, but I don't think I have the innate skill with english to make getting a 5 easy without some crazy studying tonight, which I don't plan to do. I'd look them up, but I'm a little lazy right now... what is ESPM and NES? Also, are classes actually filling up right now? Or will that only happen once I go to CalSo? Should I make sure I finalize my Advising Tutorial quickly?

I took Italian just for fun, after satisfying FL with high-school Spanish. If you are interested in French, by all means, take it. I have a great experience with my Italian class, and I've heard nothing but good things from my friends who are taking Spanish, French, Japanese, and Russian.

NES is Near Eastern Studies, and ESPM is Environmental Science Policy and Management. They pretty much have nothing to do with the major, but are for fun and personal interest. However, my ESPM class did satisfy the Social and Behavioral breadth requirement.

Classes are being filled right now because Telebears has begun for all continuing students. (In fact, it started a little less than a month ago.) Incoming freshmen won't be able to register until CalSO, though, at the earliest.

It looks like all of the language courses are 5 unit, 5 days a week. I don't think I am going to go down that path first semester, we'll see.

Unfortunately, I am going to the july 7 calso, so I guess a lot of classes will be filled by then. I'd like to get into a freshman seminar, math 1A or 1B (any advice about which to take? im pretty good at math, 4 on the calc AB and I feel like a 5 a few days ago on the stats), chem 1A or 1B (same as above, which one? 5 on AP chem, but that was sophomore year), and maybe a history or polysci course.

look good? any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

I'm not quite sure about Math 1A/1B (I haven't taken either), but you should sign up for Chem 1A. You can sign up for Chem 3A if you are confident in your general chemistry skills. However, MCB does not require Chem 1B as a major prerequisite. The lower-division chemistry prerequisites for MCB are Chem 1A, Chem 3A, and Chem 3B.

I think I am going to go with Math 1A, and Chem 1A. I want to go to med school, and grades are more important than anything else. has anyone here taken filippenko's class? my dad kind of knows him, and thinks that i should. its astronomy/astrophysics, which I am kind of interested in, but maybe I should wait until sophomore year?

edit: also, when something is a major prereq., does that mean that you NEED to take it specifically, or that you can skip it if you take a harder class? for instance, if I took chem 3a or 3b, would that exempt me from taking 1a or 3a, respectively?
