Incoming freshman, undecided in l&s atm, but want to do mcb

so i want to major in mcb-mcb track (not the chemistry one..)

anyway, my calSO is on the 14th-15th, and i was wondering if I should take Bio 1A and Bio 1AL during my first semester, or CHEM 1A first semester?

One of my mom's friend's daughter graduated like 2 years ago or something, and she says that Bio 1A is like the 2nd toughest course in mcb. Is that true? If it is, i might want to take something easy first sem right?

so should i take Chem 1A, or bio1a/1aL first? i also plan on applying to medical school.

also, for reading and writing requirement thing, which class is the easiest one? thanks.

Look at the requirements for each course, you can’t take Bio1A/1AL until you have taken Chem3A (Organic Chemistry).

Take Chem 1A and Bio 1B? Or take math if you don’t have AP credit to waive it.

For reading/writing just get into anything that is open and at a good time for you.

i guess i’ll take chem 1A.

holy shat, i just got a severe headache.

i’m doing the courserank thing, and i realize that each class has totally different times. the good times for me clash. and then i forgot about discussion things and labs and stuff. how do i know which discussion is good?

what about teachers? which ones are good? arghhhhh and then final times and midterm times, and they can’t clash either. but one class i’m taking has not listed their times yet, so i have no clue.

ok so these are the classes i am interested in taking first semester:

chem 1A and then the lab. also, on courserank, it had a CHEM 1A VOL thing. what is VOL?

math 1A, and math1A discussion. which discussion should i pick? and then there are totally different times, and a lot clashes with my other class times.

s. asian r5A

and then, anthro 24, frosh seminar thing.

ugh.

A lot of incoming freshmens are intended MCB- it’s like by default or something. Most end up switching to something else in the process of taking the pre-reqs.

But with that said, you should definitely take either Math 1A or Chem 1A during your first semester. Taking both during your first semester may be difficult since you aren’t used to Berkeley-style classes.

Chem 1A is a lot easier during the spring than the fall though. Best of luck!

Are you sure Chem 1A is easier in the fall? This sounds like a rumor.

^ No, it’s easier in the spring because most pre-meds take it in the fall making it that much more competitive.

Ok well, if i don’t take chem1A in the fall, what can i replace it with? I need a min of 13 units…i just want to stay at that first sem so I can adjust, and then go hardcore the next semesters.

I also used this ninja escape thing that generated a schedule for me. On mondays, assuming I still want to take chem 1A, it places s. asian, chem1A, and then math1A right after each other. like each class ends when the next one starts…thats not a good idea, is it?

should i leave like an hour gap between classes or osmething so i can make it on time? thanks!

You don’t need to leave a gap between classes because of “Berkeley time” - that is, each class begins 10 minutes after the listed time to allow students to get there from across campus.

@insertname: try Physics 8A. Or better yet, take an AC class or any of the 7 L&S breadth requirement.

ok well, should i take the minimum of 13 units? or take more units to whatever the max is? (which i think is 16 units)

anyway, you guys say chem1A is better in the spring, so I’ll take that then.

so, the classes I want to take are:

math1A (also, if for some reason, I don’t pass the ap calc ab exam (not sure how i did), do i have to take a diagnostic test to pass into this class?)

s. asian r5A (to finish off the r and c requirement)

maybe the ib seminar?

and an ac class?

but, if I don’t take math1A and chem1A the same time, won’t I fall behind for premed and stuff?

also, what about bio 1B, should i take that? is it easy? and no way, no physics–>i suck at physics and waiting till senior year for that, lol

It’s always a good idea to take the minimum 13 units in your first semester even though you’ll probably take an average of 15~16 later on. The max is 21 units. And yeah, a math class (whether if it’s 1A or 1B), an R5A, an AC, and a seminar looks quite chill and a good way to start your first semester.

taking chem 1a spring semester is ok, but if you’ve taken AP chem, it isn’t too bad.

another reason why you shouldn’t start the physics series yet, is that it’s more important to get the chem series out of the way because if you want to do mcb you have to take chem 1a –> chem 3a/3al –> chem 3b/3bl <–> bio 1a/1al –> mcb 102 –> mcb 104 roughly in that order, so you don’t want to start taking chem 1a in sophomore year b/c then you’re really crunched on time and have to take more than one of these each semester or do summer school.

bio 1b is already full unless by chance, someone drops and you can catch a seat. definitely doable first semester (one of the easier prereqs), but you’re better off with your proposed schedule

ok so i should take chem1A and math1A same time during fall? I didn’t take ap chem because the teacher at my school is ridiculous and fails everybody…

or shouud i stick with the math1A, american cultures, seminar, and then the reading and composition class?

just take chem 1a and math 1a. it won’t be too hard and you’ll get started on the premed path.

i would recommend chem 1a and math 1a, one other breadth/AC course (3-4 units), and a 2-unit seminar that fulfills another breadth course.

getting started on the premed path is a really good idea because a lot of people are struggling to get into the courses they want now since labs have been cut. this way you have some leeway time in case you couldn’t get into one of the chem classes one semester.

ok, so i’m thinking about this:

math 1A and chem1A with lab, which I’ll sign up for on calSO, since they only allow up to 10 credits, and these 2 are 8 i believe.

the other 2 will be an r and c course (the south asian one) and a random AC course at a good time.

would that be okay for me? or would it be too stressful?

Math 1A is 4 units, Chem 1A is 4 units, that puts you at 8 units. R&C is 4 units and if you want to take one next semester, you should really sign up for it in Phase I. Adding an easy 3 unit AC course should be okay.

Have you taken AP Calc and Chem before? If you haven’t, you may be in for a rough semester and should consider not taking the R&C

I have taken AP Calc and got B+ both semesters, since our teacher was really hard. Not sure how i did on the test just yet.

I have taken honors chem, but that was sophomore year, and our teacher was really hard. She taught AP Chem too, and most people got Cs and Bs. She never taught, so I decided to take AP bio instead.

Hm, so what do you decide?

I need to get started on the premed route and I don’t want to fall behind. But I also want to finish off R and C first year, since I have to finish it before soph year ends anyway (I think). But Math and Chem are 8 units, and R and C is 4? So only 12 units total, and I need 13 units max…

anybody, please?

I haven’t finished AO yet, and my CalSO is tomorrow. I’m stuck on this part–(85% done for AO)

My planned classes, not including AC:

Chem 1A
Math 1A
R and C, south asian R5A

I know R and C is a phase 1. Is chem1A a phase 1? What about math1A?

This is a total of 12 units, so I need at least 1 more unit for a max of 13, and I’m undecided on this. I could do a frosh seminar or something…but idk. Any help would be appreciated.
