What college most closely resembles Hogwarts?

lol beantown, yeah the resemblance is uncanny...

You should probably pay more attention to what the school is like than some sort of fantasy idea about pretending you're going to Hogwarts or something. What are you interested in (besides Harry Potter)?

Um, I'm not (and I don't think any of these posters are) going to base my college decision on its comparability to Hogwarts :) . It's just fun to think about (well, for some people :) ).

However, since you asked: I am looking for a small liberal arts college or a small university located in a suburban or rural location. I want small classes and little to no TAs. Grad school placement is important as are study abroad options. The campus would be gorgeous (hence, the hogwarts thread :) ) with much greenery. I am not completely sure of my major but I am looking into law, being a college professor, or some sort of social activism. Hopefully, the drinking/fraternity social atmosphere would not be rampant, but there would be plenty of social options.

Community College

Thanks! Some of my classmates (the Catholic ones, of course) are going to BC this fall. I've heard good things about it but not in particular regard to its campus; I've never even seen a pic of it. Thanks for posting the pictures of Boston College; it's certainly lovely.

ok..........this is pointless

Duke.

http://www.anupshetty.com/images/duke_west/duke_west_gallery.html

enough said.

wow, the chapel is lovely. i never realized that duke was so pretty...

however, haven't heard the greatest things about the ug experience (at least, not great to me)...

Nassau Community College in New York, i think that is what my cousin said...

psychicspiesfromchina, what did you hear about the undergrrad experience at Duke? After all, it is currently ranked 5th.

Newzyz, I think the general consensus for Hogwarts is Yale, Princeton, Oxford, Cambridge (obviously), and Uchicago.

yeah well northeasern doesnt have the old buildings or the fireplaces, but it does have underground tunnels.

Vassar seems to fit ye, if you've got what it takes.

Duke is the shizz, my evidence, i said so and Devil is the spokesperson.

Of course. LOL

See you at Yale, buddy. Stanford will be our backup.

hahaha :)

devil may cry-i heard that duke is cliquey, a jock school, etc. the sense of community didn't sound that great either...of course, my opinion is formed entirely from hearsay, but princetonreview is pretty accurate for hearsay :) it's also my college bible...

according to students @ pr "I always know which handbag is 'in,' because 85 percent of the girls in this 'caste' strut around with it slung over their anorexic shoulders. Students agree that "Duke tends to be slightly cliquish because of the Greek system or even because of racial differences. Everyone gets along with one another, but there's still this 'high-schoolish' superficiality that pervades the Duke campus."

for me, it's so important for the atmosphere of the uni to be great...and thus i say that the ug experience doesn't seem that great. although, i'm sure that there are friendly people...

A lot of those girls are good looking, so they are allowed to do that...just kidding, sort of

I'm sort of a high-schoolish cliquisih kid...maybe thats why I like Duke...I'm also like a good time as well, which is why I like Duke also. However, I wish the frat scene was bigger and more open - as in, open frat parties. No school is perfect...sigh

Princeton Review is silly, but each to his/her own.

In NYU, Gallatin you can major in Evil or Magic or something...isn't that sort of Hogswartsish

I disagree with the cliqueish ideal. I personally was there at Duke for four days and I saw SOME students self segregate themselves. People tend to identify with people similar to them, that's not a fault of the university. Moreover, "anorexic" girls are NOT prevalent at Duke. lol The girls at Duke are some of the most gorgeous you will find ANYWHERE. lol Most of the Duke body does not seem elite, and I love that about Duke. We are all smart, but we don't plaster it in each other's faces. The only other school in which I personally know has the same feel is Dartmouth.

Edit: Here is an anecdote:

When I went to the Duke send off party here in texas, I met a Duke '08er. The next day she left a message on my answering machine going in depth on everything there is to know about moving in, acomodating my parents, and getting there. Mind you, I knew this girl for all of five minutes. That speaks volumes about the student body.

Surprisely, the University of Washington has some really terrific architecture. In particular, the Suzzalo library's reading room (and the building in general) is exquisite, and very Hogwartsian.

definitely Yale, b/c of the residential colleges and architecture. though columbia claims its dining hall is Harry Potter-esque...

Since bits of harry potter was filmed at Christchurch college at Oxford University, I would go with it.
