Overrated because Duke kids on this forum say it’s on par with HYP and top tier Ivies…

I’d never go to Kutztown University in Pennsylvania, everyone has STD’s there apparently haha

I would never go to community college, too many nerds and geeks for me :(

Actually put Duke on my list. I dislike basketball, and feel Duke is pretty overrated in many aspects. Top 10 by USnews? Please someone get me some aspirin…

Quote: “Overrated because Duke kids on this forum say it’s on par with HYP and top tier Ivies.”

And what is your point? For some kids (like my S) it was not only on par , but a step better. I still haven’t heard a valid reason as to why it is overrated from anyone who graduated from there.

I have yet to understand , or even get an explanation as to the “many aspects” that make Duke overrated. No one we know regrets the experience. Many picked Duke over the ivy options…

The one thing my son has found is that many who claim Duke to be overrated may be the same folks who may have been rejected by Duke.

Hmm… I never took classes at Duke before… I’ve taken classes at Harvard/MIT… They are not necessarily better…

I personally believe Duke is on par with Harvard, Stanford, and Georgetown. Dukies on these boards make it seem like Duke is incredibly superior to any other school in the nation… That is why many Duke posters have left and have stopped posting because they basically ruined Duke’s reputation on these boards :-P

I actually do not have a point. You didn’t understand why Duke is overrated. I answered it for you. You are responding to my answer in disbelief (like you already saw that coming).

What is YOUR point.

YEAH, I got off the wait list at Duke… I chose Hopkins over Duke. You are wrong. (this is yet another example of why Dukies like to put their own school up on a pedestal… which reinforces the notion that Duke is highly overrated by their own students on CC forums)

You are one upping Harvard right there. Good for you. Duke = Harvard of the South.

You validated my point. My point was that you had no point. ;)

I don’t think that “Dukies” think that Duke is superior. I simply believe that they do not think it inferior either. Rather it is usually the folks not familiar with Duke that claim it to be overrated. When challenged, they usually concede with a statement, “it just is”.

I think it is wonderful that all students support the schools that they attend, plan to attend, or graduated from. It is wonderful to be proud of the school that you may be affiliated with. However, that doesn’t mean that another school that you are not affiliated with somehow is overrated…

Greens… may I remind you that Animal House was inspired by none other than Dartmouth. :-O

My point was that ppl on CC forums think Duke is overrated because Duke posters put down other schools and put their own school on a pedestal. Just like your comment right there about how “ppl who think Duke is overrated must have been rejected by Duke.”

That is just one example of millions before it. I’m sure Duke is a really great place for undergraduates students and graduate students alike. There is no need to excessively bolster your school like it’s Harvard’s little brother. We know Duke is a great school. We don’t need to here Duke posters putting down other schools in the process of elevating their own precious alma mater. Duke is an incredibly fine school.

I hope to get into Duke Fuqua for my MBA My personal belief is that Duke is on par with upper Ivies… Ppl think it’s overrated because some Duke posters think they are better than HYSPM. (which may be true for some students… but COME ON… LOL)

I will also like to say any secondary state school such as a Cal State, Georgia State, Iowa State, etc. Schools which tend to be tier 3 and 4 aren’t for me.

phead,
Congratulations. You are going to a great school.

I have been following this board for a while. (I have child # 2 looking at colleges now. ) I really haven’t seen the “Dukies” (actual students) put down other schools. They are usually just defending their school from those who have no knowledge of Duke, other than hearsay or perhaps a “gut feeling” derived from a ten minute campus tour.

Now that I am looking at colleges with my daughter, I would much rather her gain knowledge about a school from those who attend the school, or from those who recently graduated. I can read all the other fluff in the college books or on this board. ;)

P.S. Not all “Dukies” are equal.

I’m with 1sokkermom. I’d pick Duke over HYP as well. Unless you attend U North Carolina, it’s always been difficult for me to understand what’s behind the comments about Duke. Is it jealousy? IMO, it’s a great place with a terrific, spirited student body.

For the full undergraduate college experience where one has fantastic academics, an outstanding peer group, a gorgeous campus, nationally competitive and relevant athletics, and a social life that is as varied and vibrant as many state Us, Duke has it all. Only a few other colleges-Stanford, Northwestern, Rice, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame-can make such a claim.

What’s not to like?

Miami(Ohio):
-Preppy
-Too conservative
-In the middle of nowhere
-Too little sports culture
-Too white

I think I would have really liked Rice but I don’t like the heat, so there’s one. Really anything south of Virginia I didn’t even consider, but I’m not sure that I’d NEVER go there.

I would hate to ever write anything off because the college I’ll be attending is one that I didn’t even consider until the peak of the application process.

Phead128… I agree that Duke is on par with G-town, but I always think that Harvard, Stanford, and MIT are in a different class. And no, the classes are not necessarily better. I’ve also taken classes at both and think that Harvard classes are overrated. But I do think that there is a difference in the caliber of the student population. (Of course, this point could be argued and argued without the right answer.)

Going back to the original post, I’d never go to Yale or Princeton simply because of its atmosphere.

You mean to say…Dook.

What no facial hair?!? That means Jesus wouldn’t get to go there then.

I would also add St. Johns, Long Island U and Adelphi University, I just haven’t heard good things about them.

There’s a difference between schools like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Uchicago, and Hopkins than schools like Duke, Georgetown, and Notre Dame.

For the most part, the first group usually gets students that apply and are interested mostly based on the academics associated.

The second group gets students who are hyped up about the sports, lifestyle, etc that might sometimes supercede the academic excellence.

That is the primary difference.

LAC - William Jewel College
University - Purdue University
