What colleges are still accepting applications?

Hi, I’m a senior who applied to many rigorous schools. As of now I only have a few acceptances and I’m getting worried. Looking for some well-respected schools that are still taking applications as of today, March 19.

I am not sure what you mean by well respected, but you can look here for colleges with relatively late deadlines. Colleges With Late Application Deadlines: Complete List

Also, on commonapp, you can go to the college search tab and choose schools with deadlines after today.

If you want some suggestions, let us know your stats, what you are looking for in college, and budget. Decisions to date would be helpful too.

Good luck.

Your intended major, home state, budget, and where you have been accepted would be helpful. There is no point in suggesting schools that are not as good as schools that you have already been accepted to.

Intended major in political science on a pre-law track.
Accepted: Michigan State, CU Boulder, Clemson
Rejected: UCLA, Villanova, Northeastern, and Williams.
GPA: 3.9 UW, lots of EC and voulenteer work. 5 AP/college classes (my school didn’t offer many). Don’t intend to submit ACT.

Still waiting on more decisions but not crazy about any of the schools I’ve gotten into so far so I’m just looking for other potential options.

These are terrific acceptances. Going to any of these three where you already have been accepted would be fine. Presumably you applied to these colleges for a reason.

I think you need to start celebrating your successes!

You have 3 good choices and are likely to have more before very long. While there are some schools still accepting applications, they are unlikely to be highly ranked schools. Most schools will issue their decisions between now and April 1. The response date is May 1. In early May, the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) releases its College Openings Update — a list of colleges that still have openings for the coming academic year. If you are still unhappy with your choices, you should deposit at the school you are admitted to that you would be happiest to attend. You could apply to some schools on the NACAC list then.

What is your budget as you try to navigate this? Are you in need of merit or financial aid?

For the three you are accepted to, what did you like about them enough to apply?

Your overall list is somewhat random. Where else are you waiting on? Which ones have you visited in person? What did you like about some of the colleges where you could picture yourself beyond the branding or prestige you may be looking for?

Clemson is very well-respected and I know several excellent lawyers who went to undergrad there. They waitlisted and denied many highly qualified applicants this year. UC Boulder is an excellent, well-respected university, as well.

Michigan State is well regarded as well. Really, all three of these acceptances should be celebrated.

Not sure why you need more. You can only go to one. But with a 3.9 (not 3.89), Arizona will be inexpensive and only looks at GPA. Depending on major, it’s in the same bucket as your other acceptances but is likely less expensive.

You should visit Clemson. It’s a fantastic school, and if you are into engineering, they have a very well respected program.

On a lighter note, before you dismiss Michigan State, you should watch Don’t Look Up. Some funny and biting commentary on those who look down their noses at Michigan State, and a reminder that a college of that size is full of opportunity and discovery. More seriously, I don’t think the schools on the summer NACAC list are likely to outprestige what you have here. Clemson, CU Boulder, MSU…these are desirable large schools. OTOH if you have figured out you want an entirely different type of school, then gap year might be the path to consider.

As others have mentioned, you have some great admittances. I would thoroughly research the universities again, looking at all the special opportunities that each of them would provide you. Remember why you applied to them in the first place!

If, however, you have come to the realization that they are not for you, I am going to assume that your issue is the size of the universities, even though there are ways to make a big university feel smaller (living learning communities where you take multiple classes together, honors colleges, smaller colleges w/in the university or having a smaller major, etc).

Below is a list of universities that seem to still be accepting applications, if they have space available. I verified about half the list, but didn’t check on the other half.

Schools with CTCL by them are part of the Colleges That Change Lives.

Realize that a number of schools that are still accepting applications have already had their deadlines for merit aid pass, or at least priority deadlines pass. If you are in need of financial aid to pay for these, you will be getting the remaining dregs.

Yesterday there was someone who was looking for more colleges like Villanova, and this post I did might have helpful suggestions (some of which you’ll see repeated below). Creighton, Loyola Chicago, Valparaiso, and Xavier had the most repeats from those lists (bolded below), while Belmont, U. of Scranton, and U. of the Pacific were also mentioned (italicized below).

  • Augustana College (IL), April 1
  • Azusa Pacific (CA), July 1
  • Baldwin Wallace (OH), August
  • Belmont (TN) – rolling
  • Bradley (IL) – space available
  • Calvin (MI), April 30
  • Creighton (NE)
  • Eckerd (FL) – rolling, CTCL
  • Gustavus Adolphus (MN) – rolling
  • Hofstra (NY) – rolling
  • Hope (MI), CTCL
  • John Carroll (OH) – space available
  • Le Moyne (NY) – rolling
  • Loyola Chicago (IL)
  • Luther (IA) – rolling
  • Manhattan (NY) – rolling
  • Marietta (OH)
  • Merrimack (MA) – rolling
  • Millsaps (MS), CTCL
  • Northwestern College (IA)
  • Otterbein (OH)
  • Principia (IL)
  • Rider (NJ)
  • Ripon (WI)
  • Samford (AL)
  • St. Francis (PA )
  • St. John Fisher (NY)
  • Truman State (MO)
  • Union (TN)
  • U. of Evansville (IN)
  • U. of Scranton (PA )
  • U. of Tulsa (OK)
  • U. of the Pacific (CA)
  • Valparaiso (IN)
  • Xavier (OH)

Also, @blossom has had some very positive words about Otterbein and Truman State, if I recall correctly.

Are MSU, Boulder, and Clemson affordable? If so, you can certainly achieve all of your goals from any of those schools.

Did you search common app and look at the schools still accepting applications? Are any appealing?

What schools are you still waiting for decisions?

I would not wait until the NACAC list comes out (usually first week of may, so you will have to deposit somewhere by then) to get more apps in, if you are sure you want to do that.

What is it about the schools where you got in that you don’t like? Of the schools you listed results for, Williams seems like a big typo. The same student who would thrive and love the scene at UCLA or the other biggies would find Williams absolutely claustrophobic.

I think you should wait until all of your results are in and reevaluate. There was a reason you applied where you did. The schools haven’t changed since then. If your preferences have, then that is another story but so far, you haven’t said what it is that you are unhappy about.

My youngest daughter is a freshman at Clemson (business, honors). 3.9 UGPA, 33 act, 7 AP’s, from NJ (first student from her HS to go to Clemson). She is in heaven (well right now she’s in Florida on spring break). This is my fourth college as a parent, and while all of my kids loved their college experiences, this one has been the most amazing. We will see how BU compares.

It’s a fair question that if you wouldn’t be satisfied with the schools you were accepted to than why did you apply in the first place ? What are you seeking ? Higher rank ? Smaller size ? Something else ?

Typically the late acceptors, mostly fine schools, are accepting because not enough kids desired them.

Your application process worked well. You got into the schools you were deemed qualified for and turned down where not.

And at all three schools you got into, you will find outstanding opportunities should you avail yourself to them.

Just curious why the need to look further ?? Can you answer that ? It would help us all I think.

The fact that you said you want well respected is all you need to say. You thought you were going top 20 instead of top 80 or 100 or what not.

We’ll you got into 3 great schools and btw, you and not your school are what will make your success. Kids will come from Harvard and not do well in life and tons of kids from each of those schools will be the scions of society.

Some of you definitely took this the wrong way, but thanks to those who replied with useful information. I am aware these are all excellent schools, just not my first choice. Just wanted to explore all possible options!

Let us know where you decide to enroll.
