What did you turn down for Rice?

Hey everyone, I just joined CC today after perusing it for the past four years. I saw that there are many “what did you turn down for ____” threads around, but none for Rice, so I decided to start this. It’ll be fun, and it’ll be a step for us new Owls to get to know each other. Go Owls class of 2019!!! I’m happy we all committed to Rice! =)

Oh right, I’ll begin. I turned down Carnegie Mellon, USC, NYU, and a couple women’s colleges from the seven sisters consortium. ;:wink:

My son turned down Dartmouth, Swarthmore, Rose-Hulman Institute, and U. of Rochester. The latter two offered very nice merit packages, but he is going to Rice with no merit offer. It just seemed like the best fit and best overall college experience.

I turned down Washington University in St. Louis, University of Texas Liberal Arts Honors Program, and Bryn Mawr College. So great to have some options, but as soon as I got my Rice letter I’d pretty much made up my mind.

My daughter had panned to go to Smith ever since she visited it junior year. That all changed when she went to owl days. She turned down Emory, Smith, Grinnell , and Colgate and pulled out of the wait list of Haverford and Dartmouth. She is coming all the way from NJ to go to Rice. Problem is out here not many people have heard of rice and the gear all says Rice instead of Rice university and everybody thinks she’s going to culinary school or something. They need gear that says Rice University for is out here in the northeast

@robotrainbow Haha, that is so true! I’m from Cali bay area and thankfully, most people have actually heard of Rice.

My Son turned down Carnegie Mellon (Tepper School of Business), UCLA, Berkeley, UT Austin McCombs. He is on wait list for Busines Honors at McComs and that could be interesting and also on wait list for U Chicago.

UCLA, Berkeley, all other UCs applied to, Vassar, Wesleyan (because of $ this one was just out)

@robotrainbow turned down Emory? is that why she was on the waitlist for Emory according to yourself? please save the soap stories, dog.

@HumbleForce I believe robotrainbow’s daughter turned down Oxford @ Emory, and pulled out of Emory University’s waitlist

Carnegie Mellon CS, Berkeley EECS, Cornell engineering

@robotrainbow wow, that IS hilarious!

Daughter turned down Bryn Mawr, Wash U, Davidson, Emory, SMU.

Daughter turned down Penn, Duke, Rose Hulman, George Mason, Georgia Tech, UF, and UCF, We are from Florida and most everyone says “What/where is Rice-never heard of that school”, so we understand the previous comment from NJ.

Carnegie Mellon, UC Berkeley, Georgia Tech, Case Western Reserve University, University of Arizona (Honors College)

@2015bl When I first saw your avatar photo, I though you were @Antarius :smiley:

D turned down Cornell, Wash U, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UCSD, Emory, Kenyon, Wheaton (IL), Sewanee, Samford, and Rollins.

Wash U–another great “quality of life” school–was a very close second choice, and one consideration favoring Rice was that fact that we felt it had better national name recognition. Based on some of the above comments, I wonder whether we might have been wrong about that . . .

@MrSamford2014
People think that they have heard of Washington University… but often they are referring to University of Washinton-Seattle, or George Washington University, or Washington and Lee, etc…

Most people who actually know about WUSTL also know about Rice.

Daughter turned down
Dartmouth, WUISL, Notre Dame, Tulane honors, SMU PreLaw honors, Baylor honors-, Fordham, RPI,
It came down to Rice or Dartmouth. Funny thing is around here (Texas) we got asked where is Dartmouth a bunch.

@wshsmom Dartmouth is a great school and all well informed people and corporations know it. Rice is a great choice. Congrats to your D for being admitted to such great schools. Best wishes to her!
