Yes. Anything else?

Yep, I would.

Yes. I only applied to one of those schools, and if I had gotten in to it in addition to Rice, I still would have gone to Rice.

Rice was my first-choice school. Period.

Dartmouth would be really tough for me to turn down. Brown would be a medium second.

I only applied to Northwestern out of those, and I got in, so I would def go to Rice over Northwestern.

I’d only MAYBE go to Brown over Rice.

Cornell might be tough to turn down. The only reason I’d go to Rice over Cornell is the weather and location.

There are a number of Rice students who have turned down Cornell. (My son was one of them.)

Lots and lots here who have turned down Cornell.
I said no to Cornell, Chicago, and Berkeley from that list. It was largely a financial situation, but in truth is just a very different school from all of those - much warmer, for one thing.

^ What do you mean by saying “no to”?

I forgot. The program would be for computer science.

I turned down Dartmouth and Cornell to come to Rice. At the time, it was a purely financial-based situation. From the first day of Orientation Week here, I have never regretted my decision for a second. Dartmouth and Cornell are fine schools and I’m sure you would find your niche anywhere, but purely what I’ve heard from my high school friends who did go to those schools, the transition from high school —> Rice is a lot easier & happier than transition from Rice —> other universities.

I know plenty of people who turned down UChicago, Northwestern, Cornell, Duke, Emory, WashU, and Hopkins for Rice. I also know of people who turned down Dartmouth, Brown, Harvard, Stanford, Penn, and Berkeley for Rice as well. There were also students from Cornell, Northwestern, and Dartmouth who transferred to Rice this year.

This is a pointless question because Rice is a peer institution of all these schools you listed, so it comes down to preference more than anything else.

I love Rice and would turn down any college for it :)

Yes, my daughter got into all of those, except she did not apply to Chicago, and in addition Duke, Vandy, Williams, and Middlebury among others. She loves Rice.

DD didn’t apply to any of those, but got in everywhere she applied. She turned down Bowdoin (with special scholarship), Grinnell, Carleton, McCalester, Oberlin, among others for Rice. No regrets! DS accepted at all he applied. Turned down honors eng. at UT, Trinity for Rice. He wanted instate engineering, so didn’t apply far afield. No regrets - he LOVES Rice and tells us often how glad he is that he didn’t go elsewhere.

DS and I visited Dartmouth and Rice this fall. If accepted to both, he would definitely choose Rice. Dartmouth just didn’t feel “right” for some reason. We’ve actually talked to quite a few students from our area who felt the same way about Dartmouth.

^ what is DS?

Ds = dear son, or damn son, depending on the circumstance. Commonly used on msg boards – ds, dd, dh, dw etc …
