I was unable to attend barnard’s information session…so what type of student is barnard looking for?
i know columbia kept talking about “education that inspires a person to become an effective and active citizen of the world”…whats barnard’s philosophy? (in your opinion if one doesnt actually exist.)

on top of that my SATs are towards the lower end (1950) so I really need to stand out. I have the URM hook but I want to stand out to the best of my ability

Maybe this helps?
[Admission - Applying to Barnard](http://www.barnard.edu/admiss/apply/)

did you know the average SAT score is a 1500? so having a score in the 1900s is NOT low!

thanks for the responses.
i read through many of the barnard sites, but sometimes when you actualy attend an info. meeting, you get ore of a feel of what the school might be looking for.

@lorrainedelis: I’m pretty sure 1500 is math and critical reading combined WITHOUT the writing section.

I think lorrainedelis is talking about national averages - not Barnard averages. The last published common data set for Barnard that I’ve seen (08-09) said that the middle 50% for math was 610-700 and CR was 640-740. The middle 50% on the ACT was 28-31.

wahkimoocow - when I sat through the info session I really got a sense that they were looking for a whole person and not someone who was just a superstar at one thing. For example, I’m a science person, but my most of my interview, which was with an adcom member and not a senior student, consisted of me being asked about my thoughts on literature, what I read in school, what I liked about various characters etc. I think if I’d had a student interviewer or an alumna I might have had a more typical interview.

^thanks. hopefully Barnard isn’t one of those schools who only (exageration of course) care about SAT scores.

lorraindelis was more than likely talking about the national average which is 1500 give or take a few.

If this is true, I fit within the median ranges

@lorraindelis: Sorry sorry! Read that so fast. My bad! Yes, I feel good about myself when I look at myself in context of the national average.

I fit within the middle ranges too, which is good I guess. and yes, I was talking about national averages, but still even for Barnard, your score isn’t low…haha I know I feel good in that context too! :)

My experience is limited, but I have known many Barnard women and also have seen who Barnard rejects.

It seems that GPA is most important to Barnard. Test scores slightly less.

Barnard is also a school very interested in fit. The ad com doesn’t want to accept anyone who immediately wants to be at a co-ed school or hates NYC. The most successful applications demonstrate that the school and the student fit each other. They want a contented student body.

Fit seems more important at LAC’s than at unis, but we found these considerations at the small unis too.
