what do cornell students do for fun?

I know this question sounds cliche, but now that I've narrowed down my college list to Cornell, Berkeley and UMD, one thing that stands out as far as differences is the remoteness of Cornell.

Berkeley is/ was my dream school. When I wondered, "What to berkeley students do for fun?" I could come up with tons of answers: go to san fransisco, go to concerts, go to a new restaurant, go to a club, even go sightsee/ museums, movies, etc

UMD offers Metro service into d.c.

Cornell offers....gorges?
i've heard some people go on about hiking, rockcliming, skiing etc and i'm not demanding a big city in just a short drive from my school, but i'm a little concerned.

i dont know much about the college town near cornell, to be honest. it just occured to me that when i visited in the fall, some of the students were talking about 'going to the wegmans' as if it were some giant trek far away... what kind of fun stuff happens/what does the city of ithaca have to offer that might not be right on campus, or maybe even that is but that i have overlooked?

EDIT: another thing that concerns me is that i plan to be an engineering major, but that ithaca does not have the industry for local jobs/internships. please tell me i am way off??

promiscuous sex, drugs, and rock and roll :)

^ yup.

In addition…

Cornell students do for fun what any students would do for fun. That’s the case because Cornell has ALL kinds of kids, not any particular subculture or something.

count down the days till school over

Between school work and extracurriculars, I was never at a loss for things to do on campus.

Some non-outdoor activities that I did in my day:

– Go out to eat at one of many of Ithaca’s wonderful restaurants (including Thai Cuisine, ABC Cafe, and Just a Taste!)

– Grab coffee at Gimmee Coffee

– Book shopping at the Ithaca Book Sale.

– Apple picking in the Orchards.

– Thrift stores on the Commons.

– Random midnight movies at Cornell Cinema.

– Ithaca Science Center, Lab of Ornithology, or Museum of the Earth

– Catch a live music show at Chapter House, Castaways, the Haunt, or whatever Fanclub Collective has brought to campus.

– Turning Stone Casino

– Roadtrip to Toronto or Montreal

– Wine tours

– Spend a day working for habitat for humanity.

– Host dinner parties for each other.

– Roadtrip to follow the hockey team

– Hang out at Wegman’s.

– Attend a house party. Drink too much. Regret it the next day.

– Host a house party. Drink too much. Regret it the next day.

– Barbecue (It’s pretty much a religion at Cornell.)

– I also did a hell of a lot of snoeshowing, jogging, hiking, backpacking, fishing, kayaking, and cycling. Every student should bike around Cayuga Lake.

I found out the other day Ithaca has a mall… Not that big a deal I guess, but I found that interesting, since a lot of my friends swore up and down there was not much shopping there. A cornell student gave me a link.
[Welcome to The Shops at Ithaca Mall](http://www.theshopsatithacamall.com/)

I saw a cool video of some kids gorge-jumping. You can youtube it. Looks fun but also dangerous.

But honestly, I don’t know for sure since I’m just a h.s senior. Those are just little things I heard about and thought I’d share. Hopefully more Cornell students can tell you for sure.

^^^ LOL that has to be the worst mall ever

just looked at the mall site, doesn’t look like there are that many shops there though :(

oh man. san fransisco would be so amazing. then again i’d be so broke and in-debt if i went there i’d never be able to afford to go to a concert anyway…

There’s also an Urban Outfitters opening downtown over the summer.

For me, the Commons had most of everything I would ever need, let alone the Mall (What do you really need at a mall? A store to purchase shoes?) The only time I ever went to the mall was when I needed to purchase soccer cleats.

Oh Thai Cuisine…how I miss thee

Speaking concerts, Cornell just had GZA (awesome) and Girltalk (eh…meh…) show up.

They’ve had Snoop Dog, the Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, and many other acts come to campus.

Of course this slope day will blow because the…pussycat dolls…have been booked.

I suppose that’s what an economic downturn does.

sf is pretty far from berk actually like 45 mins i think. collegetown is a bit smaller thank the town of berk, but offers great restaurants, fun bars. gorges are near by. hiking is close. nyc is only 3.5 hrs, philly is about the same. tons of frat parties, extracurriculars, cornell hockey. tailgaiting cornell lax. syracuse is 1 hr away with soon to be the largest mall in america. johnson museum. commons is very fun with restaurants thrift shops, etc. its easy to get around cornell. concerts at state street theater, concerts on campus. road trips. slope day.

even umd is a bit far from dc like 30 mins, and its not nearly as good as a school as cornell or berk.

cayugared is that true? i definitely would miss UO if i went to cornell, but that would actually make me want to go to cornell more (stupid yes).

[Urban Outfitters to Open in Ithaca | The Cornell Daily Sun](Urban Outfitters to Open in Ithaca - The Cornell Daily Sun)

commit suicide?

suicides happen anywhere you end up - Cornell’s suicides tend to catch more media attention because we’ve had the reputation for more ppl committing suicides. However, look at what NYU’s been going through recently - kids jump off of their skyscraper dorm rooms.

besides that, you should know that Ithaca is a wonderful small town with great many unique and famous restaurants (Moosewood Cafe, The Lost Dog Cafe, the Carriage House, etc.). There’re also local festivals such as the Chili cookoff and Apple harvest. There’s the local Farmer’s Market ([Ithaca Farmer’s Market](http://www.ithacamarket.com/home.php)).

Also, there’re numerous beautiful state parks a short drive away. On any given day, you could drive down to the park that’s downtown and catch a beautiful sunset.
Cornell really gives you some time to grow as a person on this earth, when you take away all the academic stimulations and great peers and professors.

Hmm, i like to spend my time watching tv and playing xbox. It is loads of fun.

sounds pretty cool.

there are also tons of student productions such as improv, plays, musicals, concerts(of all types, jazz, orchestra, acapella, etc) that you can go to if that type of thing interests you.

also from your list

“go to san fransisco, go to concerts, go to a new restaurant, go to a club, even go sightsee/ museums, movies, etc”

you can do everything except go to a club and go to san fransisco, both of which are rather expensive. We have concerts, lots and lots of restaurants, natural sightseeing(for example the waterfalls in the gorges are pretty cool hang around/in during orientation when its still warm out), museums(even one right on campus), and movie theaters(indy and mainstream). Parties(frat, house, co-op, etc) are also kind of similar to going to a club except cheaper since alcohol is free and no cover fee and less fancy stuff since students with smaller budgets decorate rather than professionals. Ithaca has some excellent restaurants btw. And you can take a roadtrip to montreal, toronto, or NYC if you want some time in a city, though not as often as you could to san fran or dc from the other schools, but again most things fun to do in a city costs money.
