What do I major in if I want to be a wedding planner?

I'm thinking about wedding planning as a career, I heard that you only need a certificate, and from others I heard I have to major in marketing or business. I'm confused because I don't know which major to choose from. Help me out?

My opinion would be a business degree because you can go into any business with that, and usually a business major will also cover marketing.

I second business, as you will gain invaluable knowledge about running your own business and handling finances which will be good for anyone planning on becoming self-employed AND if you change your mind down the line it will be a great knowledge base and a good degree for any career choice. You can find a college where you could minor in marketing or something related, but business is probably the best major.

I would suggest Hotel and/or Hospitality Management to learn about the different types of options available for weddings. Business could be a good minor but you could make more connections and learn more hands on stuff with a hospitality major.

For $250k you can design that major at Brown.

I would think that Psychology would be a useful major, since so much of planning a wedding is managing the people involved.

If you are looking to become a wedding planner, college would be an avenue to learn relevant skills. The actual degree itself will not be useful as most wedding planners work independently and clients could not care less if you have a degree. Public relations, business, interior design are all areas that may come in handy. Going to an expensive school would just be a waste of money.

I would strongly consider Biophysics at ITT Technical Institute. They have a strong reputable program. 99% of students aspired at one point to be wedding planners.

Wherever you do study, I’d suggest volunteering to work on the various planning committees for major events - Homecoming, Graduation, Alumni Weekend, etc. If your residence hall or sorority/fraternity has large social events, join those committees. This will help you learn how to manage money, time, and people so that you are better prepared for those aspects of your future career.

I know that UNLV has an “event planning” focus within the hotel management major.
