Hello CCers!

I am currently a junior in high school. I am very interested in becoming a casting director (in NYC, so more musical theatre/plays than movies/tv shows). The question is, what should I major in? I am looking at schools for directing and dramaturgy but I didn't want to miss out on any other majors.

Thanks!

I’m not an expert in this, but I know that at least some folks who have performance majors in Theatre and MT (both BAs and BFAs) go on to become casting directors. I know many of D’s MT friends have taken NYC internships with top casting agencies, and some have gone on to careers in that field.

From what I understand, agencies do NOT want to hire people who are simultaneously trying to be actors/MT, but they like people who are very familiar with the business and former performers fit that bill nicely.

We also know people who were professional stage managers who went on to become casting directors and/or agents, so that might be another route.

Best of luck to you! I hope some day you hire all of our kids. ;)

Point Park offers a degree in Sports Arts and Entertainment Management. Some kids go directly into this program and I do know some of the COPA BA students minor in it. It offers incredible internship opportunities and it might be helpful to take a look at it. Hope the link works!

Thanks CTownMom and MomCares!

I was leaning towards a non-performance degree, but definitely not crossing any out of the picture. I was thinking maybe a BA Theatre Studies degree with a concentration in directing or dramaturgy could work.
Any one else have any suggestions?
