What do I need to do to get into UNC OUT OF STATE?

I live in Northern Virginia, and go to a very competitive high school (in the top 100 public high schools in the country) I'm a freshmen currently. It is basically my dream to get into UNC, and want to know what exactly I need to do. Typically, one of the top students in my high school get in, and only about 1-2 from the whole high school (around 500 per class) I get straight A's, take Honor and AP courses. I play basketball and row crew. What other extracurricular activities should I take? Any administrative spots in clubs? Should I run for school office? Please help, because I'm clueless at what they like to see!

one general tip: do what you like/love, not what colleges like/love. really.

Basically, admissions officers don't want to see you doing a ton of different things. However, they also want well-rounded, successful students. Make sure you put a great deal of time in community service. Also, really put a ton of effort into the activities you do pursue (Become president, captain, just rise in the ranks...)

i got in this year OOS from ohio, and the best advice i can give is just show dedication all the ECs you do (don't try to do 17 different things, but 4 to 5 that you are truly passionate about and enjoy doing), get good teacher recs (if you have any coaches or advisers of any of your ECs that are also teachers, talk to them because they generally know your leadership, etc, as well as your academics), and really make sure you take the time to get your essays exactly how you want them. they post the topics early enough so you have more than enough time to get them just right. just make sure to really do everything you can to give them an idea of who you are.

i know how big this is for you, because i was in the exact same position. don't put all your eggs in one basket though. make sure you give yourself a back-up plan, just in case. don't ever doubt yourself though-it's the worst thing you can do in a situation like that.

best of luck! i hope you are fortunate enough to be part of such an amazing community. i can't wait until the fall to start. i hope some of what i said was helpful :)

i got into UNC with a 34 ACT and 99 weighted GPA. but i dont have any extremely good ECs except maybe yearbook editor, but im not even the chief editor. i was surprised i got in.

i'm also from northern va, and go to one of the top 100 high schools. i applied early action and got deferred. I'm a national merit finalist, got a 1500 on the SATs, and am really involved in leadership and chorus. i'm pretty sure the only reason i didn't get in is that two other kids with better GPAs (i have a 3.9) applied and were accepted, although one of them already rescinded his app. Since we use a 94-100 scale in fairfax county, your GPA is already going to be significantly lower than most counties- just try to keep your grades up! just get really involved in something you're interested in, and i'm sure it'll work out for you! good luck!

i got in w/ a 30 ACT and a 4.0 unweighted GPA. i know my ACT score isn't as high as most other OOS students who were accepted, but that just goes to show that leadership and dedication to you ECs goes a lot further than you think. to be honest i was really surprised i got in too after seeing the stats of some people who were deferred and rejected.

I got into UNC with a 4.2 (weighted) gpa and a 2050 on the SAT. I was also first-gen and lived in NC for the majority of my life (until I moved to Richmond).

running for class or school office could help.

write a non generic essay.

born a tarheel, your basically me! except i'm a sophmore, and i don't have straight A's, but my average is an A, but i'm also from nova. unc is my dream school, my mom went there, along with all of her family. how much will those legacies help me to get in if it's a reach, but not an impossible reach without them?

Im really surprised to hear all these OOS w/ supposedly hgh grades not getting in. I got in and I had a 3.7 GPA w/ a 2250 SAT and was an out-of-stater. I think the interview got me in tho.

interview..?

S2 is currently a freshman at UNC, from Northern Virginia. High grades, but not perfect, very high SATs, and showed a passion for the extacurricular activities he was in, a combination of sports and a couple of others, with some leadership positions, as well as a great deal of community service and summer jobs. He also writes well, so essays were good. There was no interview...even when we went to visit.

Keep up the grades and do your best on the testing...show passion for a few extra curriculars rather than spreading yourself thin in too many.

I applied to UNC in the second application round and have been reading more and more about it...it seems like such a great place! I really really want to get in, what are my OOS chances?

I live in CT and last year 2 students got in from my school and it was considered a big deal. This year 4 got in during the early notification period, so those of us who applied regular are a bit worried.

SAT- 660 CR 700 M 740 W (Essay 12)
SAT IIs- 700 US History 700 Math II
GPA- 3.825 UW 4.57 W
Rank- 16/491 UW 18/491 W
APs- US History (4), English Language (5), European History, Spanish Language, English Literature, Calculus AB, World History, US Gov't & Politics

ECs- School newspaper (10-12 sports editor, managing editor, editor-in-chief), Varsity soccer (9-12...captain 12), NHS, community service etc.
Awards- Bryn Mawr College Book Award, All-County Scholar Athlete, All-County Team Honorable Mention, etc.

Recs- did not read them, guidance counselor said they were good
Essays- long i wrote about journalism, short i wrote about being awful at singing...so i guess they could go either way. for the short answer questions i just put the first things that came to my head, so those could go either way as well.

I'm thinking test scores may hurt my chances, but IDK sdkfjklsdjf March 20 could not come any sooner!
