Well I will introduce my situation a little to obviously give you all an idea as to where I currently stand. I am a college freshman right now and I would like to transfer into Michigan as soon as possible. I am looking to transfer into Michigan the winter term of my sophomore year which is the winter of the 2011-2012 school year.

I have trouble recalling what I put on my original Michigan app but I remember only putting down 5 different things and none of them were particularly major. The best one I had was probably winning 2nd place at a national Chinese culture competition.

Miscellaneous: In-state resident, I got waitlisted the first time I applied and I am Asian.

College (I am attending a top 60 rated school according to US News and World Report):

Expected Major: Political Science or Economic

The classes I am currently taking are not just "gym" type classes. All my classes require some degree of effort.

Extracurriculars:
Many of these are what I anticipate to join.
The following are school clubs:
-College Democrats
-Mock Trial/ Parliamentary Debate (depending whether I make it into the mock trial team or not)
-Greenpeace
Undergraduate Research in a political field or economic field.

From my understanding, the reason I did not get admitted when I applied as a high school senior was because my GPA was a little weak, especially because I am Asian. So what should be my focus my freshman year in college to ensure that I will be among the top 40% of transfer applicants? Should I focus on getting a 4.0 or should I focus on something else? What should I do? I really appreciate the time you spent reading through my stats and I thank you for any advice (or comments) you may have.

The biggest thing they are going to look for is the GPA. Aim for a 3.5+. When I applied for Fall 2009, I was told the average admitted LSA transfer student had a 3.6. I believe this past year it was a 3.7. I got in with a 3.8 and major extracurricular involvement.

Yay for political science. I hope you get in. It’s a really great program, I am enjoying it a lot.

A big reason I want to transfer to Michigan is because of its political science program which is far superior to the one at the school I’m currently attending. Thanks a bunch for your advice and comment.

Ok cool, I guess that does take some pressure off of me when I know getting like 1 A- is OK, especially because one of my classes needs a frickin 95% for an A. And I didn’t mean I got rejected for being Asian, I mean I got rejected for being weak compared to other Asians, I mean seriously, when have you ever heard of an Asian getting into any good school with a 3.6 gpa? And that game today was pretty hype wasn’t it? Michigan’s offense finally resembles the Pat White WVU offense doesn’t it? Although the defense still could use a lot of work, I mean UConn really put up like 20 points at least if it weren’t for the drops.

looking back at your high school stats, i gotta say i’m surprised that you didn’t get in. but whatever, i’m in the same boat too: i applied to michigan my senior year, got rejected, and now i intend to transfer in. however, my goal is to transfer in the beginning of my sophomore year. also, what college are you currently attending?

So if you transfer in the beginning of your sophomore year, you feel confident that Michigan will accept you after only one semester of good college grades, since the deadline is 2/1? The reason I chose not to attempt to get in the beginning of my sophomore year (and actually get a chance to have an extra year of Michigan football) is because my senior grades are a huge drop off from my junior grades. I mean from an A average to less than a B+ average? Probably not gonna go well with the admissions people. I think that I’m going to need another year of proving that I can succeed at the college level before applying. And I’m attending the University of Pittsburgh, what about you?

well, i’m not confident up to the point of where i’m pretty sure that i’ll get in, but i’m gonna try. and if that doesn’t work, then i’ll try again. i’m currently attending texas a&m university
