I am applying for a scholarship and part of what they ask is for you to "Provide a written statement of need."

I am one of 5 kids with an older sibling graduating from college and another sibling entering her junior year at NYU.

Additionally my younger sister attends private school.

I plan on attending Penn State and I got very very bad financial aid. I am out of state and I only got $2000 for the year. So it will cost about $29,000 to attend.

How can I explain this without making it into a sob story?

As you can see a scholarship would really help.

To comment more intelligently, it would help to know about your FAFSA info and your CSS info if applicable.

I think you need to think very hard on how to phrase this -- to put in a statement on need that you want to attend a very expense school and that you have a younger sister who is in a private school indicates two things -- that your parents have money, they CHOOSE to spend it on private school for your sister, and two, that you are CHOOSING to have that need by attending an expensive private school.

I don't know the scholarship, but if need is a factor, you will be hurting. Others with single parent households below the poverty line, also with siblings, will be asking for help paying for the local state university while they live at home, work and help take care of their siblings.

Maybe you could think of a way to communicate why only this school will do?
