Since most academic year has ended for the year, and unless you take summer/spring classes you don't have University housing so, the first summer after you get to college what do people do?

In U.Mich they finish May 2nd so that means 4 months of free time. It would be great to get an internship but it might not be possible durin freshman year so what are the alternatives? Or what do people do? Travel with friends? Go home with the family? Volunteering?

I’ll definitely send a ticket for my child to come home, be with family and friends, work on a casual or part-time job.
There’s nothing more relaxing and easier than in your home country unless you have lots of money to spend! :-)

I think in my freshman year, the international students fell into 3 camps:

The poor international students got jobs on campus. (On-campus summer jobs are exempt from OPT, were relatively easy to get and came with highly subsidized summer housing.)

The rich international students spent most of their summer traveling.

A few very ambitious or well-connected international students managed to get themselves internships, some in their home country and some in the US.

Yeah, coming home to see your friends from High school is a very good plan and as in U. Mich we have 4 months, I guess I’ll have time for everything!
