my school works on an A-day/B-day block schedule so we take all eight classes all year long - finals usually hurt my year grade

ECs- Varsity Tennis, Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society), Junior Class Council, National Society of Black Engineers, HOSA(won 1st place in sports medicine regional competition, 3rd place in state competition), Unity Club, Outward Bound alum, athletic trainer, Junior Marshal (reserved for top 5% of class), National Honor Society, founder of Campus Greens chapter at my school (organization associated with the Green Political Party), Spanish Honor Society, Muslim Student Association (I am not a Muslim but I like helping the Muslim members of my community, especially here in the south) – I am obviously not active in all of these right now - this is a list of the clubs that I have joined and been active in over the past 3 years

hoping to go into urban planning/revitalization and so i'd be applying to Columbia's urban studies program

Your chances: really damn good. Your scores are in range, your ECs are great, and you are African American. No need to kid ourselves here, Columbia admits the highest percentage of African Americans of any Ivy I believe, so that is going to give you a big leg up. And for Urban Studies, theres no better city to be in than New York City. You show leadership ability, so that's going to be great for your major. Get sparkling recs and your chances are quite strong. I'm rooting for you!!

At what kind of level do you play tennis? You said varsity, but were you ever a district/regional/state qualifier? And do you plan on playing in college? If so, help from Columbia's Coach certainly would not hurt, either.

Cool..thankyou for being the only person to reply in the month that this forum has been up....I play tennis moreso for recreation/exercise so I'm not really serious about it and have no intention of playing in college. I was actually kind of shocked that I made the varsity team and I guess I will also be playing during my senior year. Are you a student at Columbia? If so what do you think? I'd love to hear everything you have to say about the school.

I'd echo Layla's comments if it wasn't for the fact that your GPA and SAT scores are a little shaky. However, I'd still say you have a great shot and I'd definitely suggest you apply ED because your interests fit so well with what Columbia has to offer.

I think your ECs are really great though and yes, being African-American does give you a very good shot. However, maybe try to get those SATs scores up a little?
