I'm pretty social but have been at the same school for a long time and really have had the same friends for years. That being said I haven't been forced to really make new friends in a long time because I've been comfortable with my current set.
How do the schools get new, specifically kids not coming as freshman, aquainted?

Are kids who already have gone to the school and have friends welcoming and open to making to friends? I know everyone will be nice, but being nice to someone doesn't necessarily mean you'll make an effort to be friends with them.

Are there some sort of dorm bonding activities?

Great question! Anyone care to tell about their boarding school orientation?

Peddie has orientation for the freshmen over the weekend, called POCO (Peddie On Campus Orientation). This includes groups of freshmen with upperclassmen leading them through ropes courses, scavenger hunts, and other fun activities. This helps them bond before the first day of classes.

At Exeter (as everyone knows by now), each new student is committed to solitary confinement the first two days, is denied food, and suffers hourly whip lashings through the daylight hours. After that, the otherwise excruciatingly painful Exeter grind actually seems bearable. It’s probably not a good fit for everyone.

Well, and then, after solitary confinement ( ), sometime during the second week, the whole school takes a day off from classes and dorms do an activity together–go to the beach, do a scavenger hunt, play football–just something to get everyone to loosen up and get to know each other. There was also a day of orientation right at the beginning, but I gather that was mostly going to meetings and listening.
