I've heard that Mech Es usually just work in HVAC stuff.. is this true? also what do chemE, and aero majors actually do in real life?

HVAC is only a small sector in the mechanical engineering field. There's robotics, manufacturing, biomechanics, and i'm sure there are plenty that I forgot.

ChemE's sit in front of reactors all day =P

My MechE housemate works at an optics company...pretty far from HVAC.

Most of the MechEs I work with have been OEM designers

there are many many fields for Mechanical Engineering. HVAC is one to be noticed though however since everyone needs AC, and refridgerators.

Another good MechE field (and EE) is power plant engineering. Imagine how our lives would be if we were not able to keep our power plants running. It's a tough job today because many of our power plants are old and require more and more work to keep them running but managers try to spend as little money as possible to maintain them.
